Default Water boiling out of header tank with cap off...

Guys,

2WD Cosworth engine, bailey header tank... temp gauge sits at quater, only rises if giving it the beans down a motorway and has never gone over halfway.

Fans have kicked in once since I have owned the car

Never burns any oil or water

No sludge in the oil

No smell in the header tank

All pipes get hot

Water boiled over when the temp gauge was between quater and halfway on the temp gauge... fans did not kick in at all...

No funny running problems, runs fine, pulls fine, no funny noises or extream condensation coming from the exhaust etc...

Any ideas?

Been told to check for air leaks, take the stat out and check it opens, common for these to stick which is a common or the water pump...

Now I guess the water pump is fine as all the pipes are hot? all the same kind of temp...?

Also I am guessing now air locks as all the pipes are hot?

Can anyone give me some instruction on removing the stat please... where, what to do, etc etc.

I want to take it out and put it in boiling water to see if it opens or not... pretty sure this is where my problem lies...

Also to add, the heater in the car works fine

Thanks in advance

Mark

The water will have a lower boiling point if the cap is not fitted.

That makes sense, when the cap is on I get no issues, bit of pressure etc. I have air con and turn this on and the fans fire up. Just put antifreeze in her, left the cap off, fired up, got it warm, pumped the rad pipes and both at the same temp, turned it off, cap on, turned back on, seems fine...

Right, put the car back together yesterday, filled back up with AF. Squeezed the inlet and outlet to the rad, both pipes warmed up to the same temp. Ran it to work today around 10 miles, no over heating, temp gauge sat at quater as it always has, hot air from the fans, no steam or smoke from the engine/header tank.

I poped the bonnet at the end of my journy and could see no leaks, no hissing or steam etc. I squeezed the pipes which you could feel had some pressure on, not hard enough to stop me from squeezing but was firm. I have a stainless bailey tank so that was showing no signs of being over preasurised.

What I have noticed now though is the pipe on the left hand side going to the rad is luke warm, the other pipe is nice and hot.

So am I right in saying this is the stat that needs replacing? I will let her cool down again and squeeze all pipes and double check we have no air trapped but pretty sure it is not.

Also, is the thermostat on the engine end of the left hand hose coming from the rad?

Looks to me like it is, 3 or 4 bolts holding it in etc...

Also, when I undo this, will all the water come pooring out? Or will it just empty a bit around that area? will I need to drop the whole water out of the system to replace this?

Thanks

Mark
