Wiring Focus st170 clocks & speedo
As above really,
im putting an st170 engine into my fiesta mk1 project and was wondering the best way to link the st170 clocks up? it is having the 6 speed box and am a bit confused as to how to connect the speedo up, is it best to get an aftermarket sensor off the rear wheel?
Any help would be most appreciated
Many thanks
Raj

it all depends on what ecu you are running.
As standard, the focus dash has several of its key features powered by a databus link to the ECU, so they are not simply wired into another car.
focus4x4 bloko had success in his focus cossie by wiring in a crank sensor to trick the ECU into thinking there was an engine and hence sending the relevant info to the dash including RPM etc.
im in the process of making a wiring loom to fit st170 dials into my puma. Ive decided on a different approach to focus4x4 and if it works my system will be stand alone. At present i have a puma ecu for PATS and a cossie ecu. I dont want a focus ecu as well just to run a dash
My plan is actually based around ford cougar dash. The joy of ford commonality means that once you take off the cougar specific binacle lens cover, you find the basic design and plastic castings are identical to the focus:

electronically the cougar clocks are an early digital set up and lack the databus communication that was introduced in the focus and all newer fords.

In essence what my mod aims to do is use the cougar electronics with the ST170 dial faces.
Its quite a good conversion because the second digital screen shows things like external temp, clock as well as the dash having the usual odometer and trip functions.
This is my wiring from puma analogue dash to cougar dash:

bit complicated but its not that bad really.

Sorry to dig up an old thread.
Did it work in the end, using a cougar dash with a st170 vss. I would of thought the mph would probably be off by some what.
Also what year of cougar dash is best to use
