The pug/shitroen xud is an amazing engine though, their honestly really good cars.
Get a nice mk3 Astra 1.7td Isuzu engined one, bombproof and hugely tuneable as well.
Mk5 fiesta tddi are ok,even an escort mk5/6 td are a good motor too, these are all really tuneable cars as well.
Watch the cambelts on the ford, rovers have just as many elec probs as the pugs and aren't a pretty car either.
Might get a high mile passat tdi for that money, deffo get a golf td (1995/98) mk3 for that money,I'm sure I've read those motors do 3/400000 miles easy and can have massive gains for lowish money.
Tons out there for the money, just eBay tdi under a grand.

Peugots XUDs are awesome engines! Pleanty of cars to choose one in too!
Peugeot 205 STDT 1.8TD (I built a 205 van with a standard 1.9TD in it using the 1.8TD box and it was a rapid little thing!!)
Peugeot 306/406 1.9TD
Peugeot 406 2.1TD
Peugeot 206 1.9D <--- not at all nippy but bloody economical and a TD should in theory drop straight in
Peugeot 405 1.9D/1.9TD <--- Getting rare and prices have started to rise!
Even these days the 2.0TDCi in Fords (Bar the transit/MK3 Mondeo) use a Peugeot DW10 lump that is based on the XUD!
I never had electrical niggles with either my French cars... Wait I lie the window switched failed on my 406 HDi. But other than that they always got me where I wanted to go and pretty economically too!
Get a Peugeot 406 1.9TD and you are garunteed a Bosch pump which can be run on 100% vegtable oil with no consequenses!
