Been thinking my footwell was wet in my 54 reg Focus for the past few weeks, today my foot slipped off the pedal a couple of times, looked down and looked on the bottom of my shoe and there is hydraulic fluid/oil leaking from somewhere.. but where? Is it an easy fix?

 

Master cylinder most likely.

It'll be the clutch master cylinder, quite a common fault. If it's leaking that badly I'd advise against driving it until it's sorted as it shares it's reservoir with the braking system, you could also loose the clutch totally.

 

Where abouts is it located? Does the dash have to come out?? Need the car for work so cannot be without it

 

You shouldn't lose the brakes as the clutch takes fluid from upper level of the reservoir, so if you ever get a situation where the clutch line goes you won't lose the brakes. You might well lose the clutch though, so either way needs sorting.

Certainly sounds like your master cylinder leaking though.

Looks like the correct part. If you need to use the car keep the b fluid top'd up.

Cheers mate, think its been doing it a week or two. I noticed it when the plastic part of the carpet (has no mats in) became shiny and wet looking, ignored it for a few days then we had no rain all week and it still looked wet, but was dry to the touch. Looked up and it was all furry around the clutch pedal arm where dust had stuck to the fluid.

Got conned on this car. bent MOT, wheel bearing gone on one corner cant work out which, problem with the inlet manifold and 2 front tyres no good ! and someone removed the engine management light bulb which now permanently illuminates once bulb fitted!

 

jack it up one wheel at a time and spin them you will find which wheel it is they are obvious on focus's as they get really graunch bearings are only a tenner to buy and really easy to fit, your problem with the manifold is it cracked by anychance? usually are that will bring the engine managment light on if it is

 

I thought id need a press to change the bearings? Im useless with cars they always defeat me. Manifold has a small split somewhere its letting air in causing erratic idle. Can hear it hissing underneath somewhere.

 

What makes you think it's the manifold? Check the breathers first.

You are correct, I am sure you do, as well as undoing the 'hub nut', which will be extremely tight.

I think the back ones come as complete units actually. So hoping its a back bearing.

 

back ones come as just a bearing, while a press helps massivley you can do them with a vice and hammer with a few big sockets too, hub nuts are tight yes but a breaker bar will undo and tighten them, there are a few breathers under the manifold that can split and one on the bulkhead too on some models but it is very common for the plastic manifolds to split

 

oh and if you struggle most garages will press the bearing for you if you take them the hub, they shouldnt charge much either

I had to change the clutch cylinder under the pedal like you are going to have to because before long it will 1. Get very messy 2. be very slippery 3. eventually go..
However, when i did mine you take the two fluid lines that go into the bulkhead off and inbetween both of them should be a bolt, undo this and then there is also a self tapping screw holding the cylinder onto the pedal undo that and it should come out easily enough. (lots of rag to take up the fluid)
Now refit the new cylinder, the trouble i had with it was its a complete pain in the ass to get a new self tapping bolt back in under the pedal! i found ratchit spanners very useful at this point! once all is refitted bleed it up (clutch nipple is ontop of the gearbox, but dont do this up to tight because if you snap it, you have to get the gearbox out!!) it took ages to get the fluid through on mine so keep at it and it will eventually bleed up
Sounds like your focus is riddled with trouble best of luck to you

 

I'm having these 2 exact same issues. Just bought the car a week ago. Couldn't hear the wheel bearing in city limits doing 50km but once I purchased and got on the highway I could hear it. On my way home brake light came on, so I checked and topped up the fluid and then a day later noticed leaking on my clutch pedal. Frustrated to the max.
