depends on what you've got to spend on the car & what you've got to spend on insurance.

Mk1 / mk2 fiesta, lower it on a set of minilites or something and it'll already be a cool little car!

3000 quid for a 1.2 Clio insurance

Possibly worth your 17yr old doing the Institutue of Adanced Motorists (IAM) advanced driving course.

Insurers do give discounts for passing it i beleive.

Might be worth looking into, plus anything that makes someone more aware and safer behind the wheel is a good thing

If you can afford it/find one, then my bet would be a 100e. Lovely little things.

Renault 4? Triumph Herald?

Maybe a Trabant?

When I was looking at quotes, I found out that if I did the pass plus my premiums went up

Don't even bother getting anything interesting for your first one. Get something uncool and cheap to insure, Daewwoo Matiz, Fiat Sceicento etc. Get a years NCD under your belt and get something interesting/ a project next year.

Classic insurance isn't offered to under 21's. Certainly not from anybody I've ever dealt with anyway

This. For some reason if a young person drives it, regardless of how old the car is, it's not a classic

That's because many young drivers don't actually realise they can't drive properly yet but insist on believing they are Ken Block and wipe things out. To be honest if I was in the insurance business I would refuse to cover under 21's full stop and 25's for anything quick

On the contrary, all the young people I know who can afford insurance drive like grannies because they dont want to have to claim on the insurance

Besides, I'd let the idiots drive anyway. See it as natural selection in progress.

Back on topic, how about a 2cv? I know they've not got the best reputation, but cant cost much to insure

Opel Manta GTE! I had one for my first car at 17, insurance was cheaper on that than any corsa, fiesta or metro
