We currently have a Cmax on a 57 plate with 23k miles, its a 1.8 petrol style.

yesterday i was driving it and noticed that its only getting about 340 miles to a 50 litre tank which works out to just under 31mpg

now the wife uses it all the time and i hardly drive it, so its mostly town driving etc with the odd long run out.

and she was saying about thats why she never has any money, cos she is always filling up the car lol so i said bollocks, ill sell it and get a diesel.

just been looking on autotrader and it should be worth about 7.5k as its the style so has 16" wheels, and a the roof tip spoiler and the reason i bought it - the panoramic glass roof lol

anyway, been looking at bimma 320d's as dad has one on an 09 plate and loves it, but the ones in our price range are about 07's with almost 100k on the clock. the milage doesnt really put me off, but what are they like to live with? we do about 8k a year in the cmax so not massive miles, and with petrol now only about 5p a litre less the derv i reckon it might pay to chop in the cmax for an oil burner as the afore mentioned bm averages around 57mpg, so nearly twice as good.

need an estate tho for getting all the kids and shit in the back.

i think ive read that lots of you lot on here have them/had them. so what are the main issues with them? was hoping to just find a dealer and do a straight swap if i could!

Cracking cars, well put together and nice to drive. My brother remapped his 320D and it drove so much nicer afterwards and got better mpg too.

 

cool, cheers mate. if we were to get one i probably would just leave it as is. cos as i said the wife uses it 95% of the time with the kids etc and i doubt she would notice if it went any better lol. but maybe if it gives even better mph then ill consider it for when i drive it lol

 

Don't be sucked into the Diesel is cheaper myth, unless you are doing considerable millage then you won't make any saving!

Remember diesel is more expensive, plus modern dervs suffer from a lot of expensive problems!

that is true mate. but at the mo derv is like 5p/l more than petrol, so say Ł5 more for a 50l tank but you get say another 200 miles, thats not bad imo

and yes, expensive parts are not good when it goes tits up, thats why i was asking what goes wrong with them lol cheers bud

Are you sure you will get another 200 miles. Also remember there wank in snow.

 

My next car will be either the 320d or 330d, so i dont blame you one bit! Note the manual is far better on mpg.

I don't agree with this talk of diesels being more expensive if you don't do plus average miles either, unless you're talking about cost of buying a car brand new - then it might be different.

I get between 550 and 600 miles per tank out of my golf, and you can still give it beans. To keep up in a bigger cc petrol or simlar capacity turbo'd car you'd dent your mpg significantly, and probably get no more than 300 - 350 to the equivalent tank!?!

dpf removal and remap = big gains too

Good car. The manual gear box is rank. Think they got it from a tractor. I've got an st tdci mondy with all the extras far better value for money in my opinion.

 

let me know how it is if you get one, may get one next year for a family car to replace the octavia.

 

Very true. The wife stopped using her fiesta st as it was quite expensive to run and started using my mondeo sttdci as it was sitting in the drive all day,she just does short runs too and it works out exactly the same mpg! To add to all of the above,short journeys about the doors are no good for a diesel,you'll need to take it out occasionally and give it a good kicking to clean iit out a bit.

 

Looked into them in the exact same price range as you as were changing our car, there a nice car but the boot is tiny for an estate really so were looking at other options

 

I've got a 320d & it gives me 50mpg on average if I'm sensible on the motorways gets 65+ love it, goes surprisingly well to.

 

Mines auto too.

First thing to do if you get one is blank off the swirl flaps, cheap & easy to do.

Common problem is they break & end up in the engine!

 

i had a 56 plate 320d estate and loved it, go for one with the i drive if poss iv got a 520d now, bit slower but its much bigger with car seats in the back drives better and has more toys as standard

 

Turbos are weak on them aswell!

 

Agree with martysmartie here,you'll never see the difference with a woman driving it.
My missus gets about 25 out of the ml whereas I've never had it drop below 30 even when towing.
Its a sweeping generalisation I know but women just don't drive economically,leaving it in high gears going up hills,not getting out of low gears round town etc,constantly stop starting rather than keeping it ticking over etc plus their often in a rush so flooring it unnecessarily.
Keep the c-max and forget about the bm,I'd be amazed if you get a straight swap on it anyway plus the petrol fords are really good buses.
One big breakdown on the bm and that's any derv savings gone.
A passat tdi would be a better option with the pd motor,more reliable and economical too.

 

I looked at 320 e46's myself whilst owning a mondy diesel.

I think once you add up the service costs the price of diesel and the fact you only do 8k miles a year you'll realise the savings wont actually be there

You wont get the mpg on short trips, they take longer to warm up

 

Mine made 222bhp atw on its last dyno run 255bhp at the fly, with just shy of 400lb/ft

she is a teacher at the local primary school, so often drives as she has books etc to kart about but does walk occasionly.

weekends its often trips to town etc/shopping which is a 15-20 min run out each way but thats about the usual we will do in an average week.

sometimes we are out a bit further but not that often i guess!

hmm, maybe we will stick with the cmax for a bit longer then and ill just try and chop my puma in for a ford ranger instead lol

 

You really want a 2008 MY with the 177 engine. It's much better. Think you may get one from 57 reg onwards. I've got both a manual 320 and an auto 520 with the 177 engine and can't fault them.

Not sure I believe some of the MPG claims above. Something in the 40-50 MPG is more like what you will see from a 177. Slightly less on an earlier car.

 

i will second polly my dads got 2010 320d 180hp variant averages 47mpg, good car to drive reasonably quick not far off the pace of small sporty hatches

 

i had an e46 320d from new to 127k, an auto one. fantastic car

 

Regardless of the difference in cost, mpg etc between diesel & petrol cars I'd have the BM over any modern Ford or VW's.

 

Not everybody is lucky enough for money to not be a factor when choosing a car!

ill have a think about it, but as vaughant said i doubt ill be able to just do a straight swap at a garage and i dont have any more cash to put towards one as we are doing a big extension at the mo. so might try and get that done first before making any decisions lol

They seem to be. My neighbours Turbo went at 80000 miles. Actually it wasn't the Turbo itself but the electronic actuator that's not sold seperately.

Really good cars apart from that. Go for it!
