Default Claiming a Dumped car

I have found an Audi A3 on a 53 plate which has been sat for more than 6mths.
2 tyres are flat, its sat under a tree and is covered in shite. its not taxed either.

Is there a process to check weather its stolen, and see if the registered keeper still wants it.
How would I go about claiming it?

contact the police and say you want to claim it and is it ok to do so, then contact the dvla for the logbook and so long as no one contests it you will get a logbook, you will not ever officially own it tho but you will be the registered keeper, a guy on here did it years ago with an escort cosworth using the above method

Its not in a garden or anything like that,
Its on a back road under some trees..... Possibly stolen?
I will drop into a police station and find out

You can apply to become the registered keeper, which basically means you become responsible for taxing / insuring it etc, however it does not make you legal owner of the vehicle. The owner could be a nutter currently in prison who will come looking for the car and you

once you get it possetion is 9/ 10ths of the law anyway, if you go to the police they note it as "dumped", they try to locate the owner and if they cant in the usual 2 weeks they will come back to you and say its yours, i did it a few times over the years with dumped cars and never had an issue mind you was like 10 years ago when scrappys charged to take cars away then

A few months ago there was a Vectra GSI abandoned near mine, tax was out, flat tyres and smashed window. I made enquiries with the police, who after finding it wasn't stolen, weren't interested and pointed me to the council. So, I made enquiries with the council, just to make them aware it was abandoned, if they weren't already aware, and that I intended applying for the V5 which seems to have been a mistake. Within the space of 2 weeks, they'd issued a notice on the vehicle, lifted it and disposed of it. Lesson learned, don't tell the council and just apply for the V5 in future.

If its on private land you’ll have no chance in claiming it though.

Long as there parked up on the driveway, side house, back garden no one can touch them in this sense.

Sorry but they are

Despite your opinion

The logbook can be applied for from the DVLA, they make every attempt to contact the registered owner over a time period, if they cant they will issue you with the V5

There is the matter of 'ownership' but trust me once you have the V5 nobody is going to be able to do a fat lot, especially once you punt it on, LEGALLY

only if its got no tax or insurance and on public land or its on private land and the landowner/resident confirms its not theirs.

You cant just go claiming cars parked on someones drive as on private land its not considered "lost".

Same as you cant touch a legally parked car on the public highway with tax and insurance.

You can in theory report any vehicle as abandoned but you would need reasonable grounds. A tax and insured car parked legally on the public highway wouldnt count as abandoned unless it was vandalised or trashed or similar.

ie you can quite safely go on that 6 month holiday (or 6 month prison sentance ) and come back and nobody will be able to have legally claimed your car as long as it was legally parked on the road, taxed and insured or on your own land in any condition.

Warren we already know from the OP that the car is untaxed and on the road so there is no argument, it CAN be claimed in theory if the current v5 holder does not respond to the DVLA's investigations

Fuck me, if the council dont take it, the police dont take it, a pikey doesnt weigh it in, a crackhead doesnt steal it, then you will be there applying for a logbook and taking it instead.....

arrange for it to be collected

have it delivered to your house

once it's there, figure out what to do with it once you've got it under a tarp

at least you can break it and get some money back form it, no one will be any the wiser (but don't do it on here otherwise the mods may ban you for trading )

its more for 1.9 xr2 bloke worried about going on holiday and his car being taken off his drive by some random claiming the v5. In that scenario it could never legally stick. Same parked on the public highway legally taxed and insured.
