Default Oil catch tanks

What casn you clever bunch tell me about oil catch tanks? Been looking at some for sale, doubt I actually need one (do half of the cars fitted with them really need them?), Any harm in fitting one? Just want to learn a little

Bttt, I don't know there use either. Anyone got an explanation? I heard it was to do with taking vacuum hoses off under certain levels, and it catches oil that comes out? Something like that? Or is that rubbish?

ive just made one for my zetec turbo. engine breather/dry sump breather.

Cool! I take only track competition cars need them really? A lot of the JDM civics and stuff seem to have them though, (I'd imagine its for the looks more than anything there).

on most new factory cars the engine breathers are piped back into the intake system and thats fine for cleaner emisions ect but not great for power.

if you just vent them straight to atmosphere you can get oil vapour going all over the place hence the breater/catch tank.

heres a pic of how i made mine.

you can see i have 3 pipes , the one on the top of the tank vents to atomsphere the other two are from the engine and my dry sump tank, you can also see the baffle to stop oil going out the vent.
