FTO's going cheap, any good?
I keep seeing these Mitsubishi FTO's on Ebay going for good prices. What are they like to run as in petrol costs, can be any worse then my T5 Volvo I had or can they? Also what about part prices and reliability and anyone driven one, are they a good drive?
windscreens are very expensive, well they were when my mate needed one - £800, alternator was about £400.
that was a few years back tho, so parts might be easier to get now.
they are not overly fast but go ok. dont know what they were like on fuel tho. oh and limited to 110mph
good value for the money they go for now

Bloody 'ell.....£400 for an alternator, ouch!
Oh so performance is not earth shattering, I though they maybe on par with the likes of a 205 GTI 1.9 or R5 GT Turbo?
Always wondered this...... When people say about imports does that pose a problem with parts, insurance etc??

normally insurance and maybe parts, get on ebay and have a look at genaral part prices, the mivics arn't slow but nothing special,I would imagine 0- 60 in around 7 -8 seconds, one tryed playing with my old 210 bhp vectra and i could pull away slightly (think he had a few people in his car),mine did a rolling start to 60 in just over 6 seconds so probaly 0 - 60 in around 7 seconds
They are not as fast as they look or sound. They sound like you are travelling at good speeds then when you look at the clock you not going any where near as fast as you think your going. They don't handle too badly but if you are going to get one get a mivec as they come in manual. I knoiw for one for sale with a bodykit, flip paint, full cream leather interior and 18's on it and the owner only wants 500 for it. Got to be worth twice that in parts I reckon. Also forgot to add that the auto's like to drink fuel and I wouldn't be suprised if it uses as much as a t5 if not more due to it always kicking down

Interesting and helpful replies......Thanks.
I have £1,000 for a car. Some FTO's are falling into this price range. So for 1k what is going to be fun, it needs to have 4/5 seats, does not matter if a 3 or 5 door though.

personally I wouldn't have a mk3 golf, tickes no boxes at all for me,fto do have rear seats but as said how usable they are not very, get a v6 mondeo or similar, few months back I sold a 2003 vauxhall vectra elegance 2.0t(have owned sri version with this engine)the engine is a saab unit and is bomb proof best engine I have owned 175bhp std,it was 6 speed x4 elec windows,cc,ac,computer, will do over 140mph and I paid £700 and sold it on for a £1000
You wouldn't have a mk3 Golf (fair enough, they aren't that popular) but you would have a Vectra? I can't begin to fathom a reason for buying a Vectra beyond them being cheap.....
when I first bought it,was around 3yr old

then crashed it

then put a new front on it

how many vectras you driven?most people watch clarkson and think there shit, seen a few shit daileys on here like mk3 golfs lol would have this any day over a mk3 golf, this had the saab engine and did nearly 150mph while returning high 20 mpg not bad for a daily
bit of a loosing battle arguing a vauxhall on PF but its gimps like this one that have opnions with no real experience and I bet my left nut that you would not walk in the pissing rain than get in a vec but if you want to look cool on the net m8 then crack on

Vectra, loved mine great car & very good value. Certainly better than a Mondeo or crap like that. Ever had one.
company car, company standard normally is vauxhall.
Went for civic, over 50k in the last 18months with no issues
The old vectras we had spent more time in the garage and handled like shit. And the seats are so f**king hard.

I have recomended them to people in the past who want something largeish and cheap to buy, as a disposable car they are perfectly acceptable to many. Just not me

Well cheap is good so thats a plus. I had a 2.6 V6 Sri for 18mths and 25k and it never missed a beat and if I am honest went well and handled well - lowered on 17's.... I think it did what I needed it to do and expected it to do and nothing more.
What more can you ask for?
Just checked out Vectras on Ebay.......I cant believe how cheap they are going. There is a 3.2 V6 going for £1,200. I remember reading some years ago that they were fast. I am sure they were hitting 60 in the mid 6's?
Puma? Get past the girly image and they are a blast to drive. A G buys a very tidy example.
I'd have to say I'm not keen on the vectra either, I've driven countless amounts, (final shape) liked the engines, but crap build quality, shocking handling, hard seats and a poor drive. Better drive in the Mondy, better build on a passat Our current fleet of insignias are worlds ahead of the vectras (just slow and lethargic, in petrol form). Still not amazing seat or handling wise, plus shocking visibilty, but much better on the whole. Happy to drive one as a company motor.

Don't like the FTO'S personally, lol at liking a Vectra although you are of course entitled to an opinion, but I can assure you it differs from the rest of the motoring population, hateful cars to look at leave alone own or drive one!

Loads as our fleet vehicles are mostly Vauxhalls (Corsas, Astras and Vectras). I find them to feel cheaply built from cheap feeling materials. You are of course entitled to your opinion and I'm not going to tell you your opinion is wrong. I also appreciate the Mk3 is not a popular Mk of GTi with many people. On the whole I find the Vauxhalls so naff that if I can't get one of the Peugeots or Subarus I use my own car for work miles and claim the mileage back so I don't have to spend time behind the wheel of them.

agree with you that the plastics feel cheap in the c and if you were in bmw you would instantly know the quality difference but as a car as a whole its not bad, true there are a few problems with the 150 cdti but look at how many sold, same story with the diesel mondeo, but the z20net is a saab engine and belive me I was only 20 when I got that car and it was passed around a few young lads so you can imagine the stick it got and the only thing that ever went wrong was a boost sensor which is £10 from vauxhall
Load's of A3 1.8t's on Ebay for around a bag of sand or a little bit more buy it now style..
I forgot this thread was about FTO's, there is a nice pink one round the corner from me which a bloke drives, i'll get a picture for you....

had them for company cars, I,ve done Afew miles in different cars (35k a year) so I can say they are crap.

What about a VW TDi? Pref the PD engine'd ones...
Bullet proof, can be remapped (130 to 168 I've seen), gave me 51.9MPG (and I not usually known to have a light foot), 37 towing the dolly and the bonus on it and sh*t loads of space - I've had a stripped mini in the back of my estate Passat (think the boras, golfs and passat's all had the same PD lump - the high line ones come fully loaded)

Just been looking at some Fiat Coupe's on Ebay. I am sure I once read they are very unreliable and expensive to run though?
Ford Pumas are nice, well apart from the 1.4 that is very slow. Trouble is I am 6'1 and 17st so may look a bit out of place driving one!
BMW E36 328i is looking good on my list at the moment!!
