ford ka coolant problem

ford ka coolant problem
On a journey in Ka, steam pissing out the bonnet so pulled over and all coolant had gone refilled but a water pipe had blown off cant think why it would do this, anyone come across this before? Or know why this could have happened? or can a faulty thermostat cause this?
