Default Focus 1.8 16V Zetec estate speedo issue

Hi,

Just picked up a 2000 Focus 1.8 Zetec and am running it for a few weeks to catch niggles before handing over to my wife.

Today I felt a momentary loss of power and my speedo dropped to 0.
After 15 seconds I felt a clip again and the speedo returned to normal.

Everything else seemed normal during the 15 seconds.

I have read about the clocks/speedo failing but I was wondering if that would make me feel a blip twice, and if I felt that blip twice would it point to something else?

Thanks.

Thanks that's a relief!

Is this a DIY job? I assume I would have to access the sensor on the engine block somewhere or the gearbox?
Do I need to route a new cable through to the speedo or just connect at the sensor.

I do a small but of DIY but generally do not like being under the car on the driveway, if I had to do that I would drop it in somewhere.

It bolted to the gearbox and has an electrical connector the connects to it that you unplug. Quite fiddly

Be carefull if using a pliers as they can shatter and split, making it that bit more difficult to remove.

I found this 'how to' vid for you:

It hasn't happened again in a month or so, so I'm leaving it for now. Thanks.

Default Vehicle speed sensor? 1.8 16v zetec focus..

Hi,

Joined today so hoping someone here can help with my long term speedo/car cutting off issue.. FORD FOCUS 2000 1.8 16V ZETEC

my speedo decided to drop to zero numerous months ago, this caused
-loss of power
-sticky gear changes

wasnt a great concern until it started to lower my revs well below the standard idle 700ish rpm, eventually causing it to cut out everytime i slow down or stop, unless i catch the clutch at biting point and keep the revs around 1000rpm.

had the Vehicle Speed Sensor changed and it worked beautifully, speedo back etc.. for about two week! then all again, the speedo, the car cutting out (even mid drive). Ive had multiple diagnostic tests and they say there is no speed output from the speed sensor.. Im going to try a different speed sensor just in case I bought a faulty one, but I've been told if its not the speed sensor, it could a dodgy gearbox due to the VSS working but a part not transmitting the speed through the gearbox? my concern is that the speedo etc worked for all of 2 weeks so could something be killing the VSS off? HELP PLEASE!!

sorry for the essay, trying to be as detailed as possible. thanks!

I remember when I had my focus Zetec a few years ago and the first time it done it to me, mine was quite random when it would do it, would do it once in a blue moon, have seen horror pics of what happens when it fails badly through .
