Default Mot question - number plates

My car is due its Mot on tuesday, I've got a cracked front number plate, crack runs from top to bottom from where it got snapped and stuck back together. I would buy a new one but can't find the V5, is the crack likely to be an issue?
Also, someone has mentioned I could present the car without number plates and it'd pass? Any truth in that?

Small stone chips etc are ok but if the damage on the plate is easily visible or it deforms the lettering then it's a fail.
