i would buy the st but the rs is far cooler
lest time for it to rust if you get the newer

str's have their problems mind, look for proof or recalls a replecement alt and the update for steering if its an early one (my sister in laws would just cut its steering quite often and mostly in the middle of roundabouts)

Bang on, although I would rather have a RS full stop. The RS is raw and feels more basic (although not too much). The ST is more refined but the handling is not a patch on the mk1 RS. I find them very nose heavy and unsettled under hard cornering. They are very comfy and have a nice turn of speed when needed though.

I'd also take the RS, i hate the MPG of the ST for what you are actually getting, like you say the handling although good isn't a patch on the RS and there way to common imo

RS without a shadow of doubt. Better more sought after resale value and for me more sence of occasion when driving one.

That's not taking anything away from the ST though as I know they are a cracking car and drove my brother's one many times.

Rs for me also, the st's mpg for the performance is pony which would be a main factor in an every day car.

St's are worth peanuts now though so you would get a decent spec one for just over 5k

I've got a modded 07 plate ST and I love it. I had a Cossie before that but me and the wife had a little girl so got the ST and it's great fun and a good family car too plus if you mod it like I have it goes really well too 😊😊

After I had the ST remapped it does 26/27 mpg. standerd it done 23/24 so a lot better then what is was. But if you like the car don't worry about the mpg just enjoy it.

Decent mk1s are still worth good money. Still see the ones for 10-11k selling but they are normally mildly modded cars with low ish miles ie under 70k

The ST is just the modern XR3i and pretty pish in comparison to the FRS.

I had an FRS before and would choose another any day. Awesome cars.

Bought an st recently. I love the way it drives and handles. Improvements can always be made but the volvo engine sounds ace. But, it will never be an rs.

I think this is more a case of which is best for you rather than which is the best car.

Never drive an RS, would love to though just to see what they are like.

I just when I fill mine up, reset the trip each fill, last tank 15.7 mpg

My ST is modded and has more power than an RS so I don't need a RS. Plus like other people have Said the 2.5 5 cylinder volvo engine is great and sounds the nuts. The RS is a Good car but so is the ST, times change and it's not just about an RS anymore the ST is just as good. At the end of the day it's each to there own.

Quite different cars tbh and you really need to drive both to decide imo....frs is the more driver focused car which is well known but the st in all fairness has more refinements and that bit newer, as well as a wider range of specs/colours to choose from.
I love my frs, bit disappointing running standard power for me however well they handle, but a few mods to get up round 300bhp and they are awesome
Go drive some, both are struggling to sell for top money at the moment so should be able to pick up a bargain!

No contest at all, gotta be the ST.

The RS is a cool car, limited run special and all that, but the ST is just in a different league, especially with a few choice mods. They really come alive at 270bhp.

FRS - I got one a few months ago.

ST - is just a big heavy beast with a big old donkey.

I will never understand why people get so wound up and up tight about 2nd hand cars loosing money............. and with the FRS it just amuses me even more.

Only in the sense that could possibly be what it replaced, but being it has more power the similarity ends there really, plus it has that great 5 pot engine.

Given the RS is more exclusive an will hold it's value better, but for a day to day car I think i'd be hard pushed to choose between the two.
