Hey guys, i'm having a little trouble with my escort's gearbox. When i shift into first, sometimes it misses first and goes into reverse, as the gearbox is quite loose & those two are quite close together. Does anyone know how to fix this?

 

could be linkage is worn mate, that would be my guess.

 

With the linkage, would it be much to replace?

 

been a long time since i had a mk3 but it wasnt much, you may be able to pick up a second hand one in working condition. Or there may be a kit with the bishes in so you can refurb it.

Pop on here as they look to be fitting one from a puma which will be easier to source.

at the very least, the site is very helpfull and all MK3 escort so people will have the bits you need if you replace like for like.

thank you, and yes it's a 4 speed, so it's slightly wierd for me to learn with. Also, it has no rev counter... Can i buy a rev counter?

 

You can either buy a rev counter that mounts where you like and wire it in, or buy some ghia/xr/rst clocks and wire them in.

It all depends on wether the box or the mechanism has the reverse gate on it. Early model had the gate built into the stick mechanism under the gearstvcik and the later ones had it built into the gearbox.

If its in the stick its easy to fix, if its in the box then it is a box out job.
