Default A Warning To Anybody Selling a Car

Copied From Pistonheads;

My friend is currently selling his A3 on PH

Got a phone call yesterday asking about the car, and also when he would be in/when would the car be there. he gave them all the details they asked for and they said they would be there in an hour, and were coming from Bradford. They didnt show up.

He arrived home 12 hours later after a night shift to find the locks on both house doors had been snapped and attempts made on the windows of the house. He has a summerhouse that has a flatscreen TV and other electrical items on show in it and not attempt was made on that, only the house.

It is only advertised on PH so people are evidently using the classifieds to target cars.
Just a word of warning, be careful what you tell complete strangers.

Some things never change then.This was always a worry when I used to buy and sell motocross bikes.Never gave anyone my address initially,I would meet them close and make sure other people were with me when I took them to my house for the sale.

Best thing to do really, if they are genuine they will stick around and show you the money, then its safe to go back to your home address to sort doc's.

Thats another point,no doc,s with MX bikes and having upto 4 at any one time worth 2-3k each is terrifying.They can disappear very easily without a trace .On a good note not one of the mx buyers used to bat an eyelid at me old Sierra glad I dont do it anymore,I sleep alot better.

I'm totally paranoid about security - I lived in London for 39 years and had an aborted attempt on my mum's garage to get my S1 and several other 'incidents'. Where I live now is very quiet and is a nice area, but I still make sure that most people don't even know where I live bar close friends and family.

Been an age old problem this.
Always tell them it's "really awkward" to find your house,satnav won't pick it up etc,do a bit of research first then offer to meet said person away from your house and drive them to the location if it's a non runner/no Mot etc.
It can be tough though cos the old boys will think something's up if you get a bit evasive about where you live etc.

Definitely the best way, simply say satnavs always have trouble you'll meet them at 'blah blah' and so on.

Also if you do give them an address, park the car on a street but not outside your house, but well within view, don't give them a house number, then they don't know where the keys are. No harm for them to ring you when they are in the street if they are genuine.
