1988 2wd Sapphire Cosworth in Moonstone Blue.
6 months tax, 12 months MOT (passed with no advisories). Just Serviced, with Genuine filter and Fuchs Titan Pro S 10w50.
I bought the car as a rolling shell 2 years ago from my mate. I wanted a Sapphire for a while, but decided to do it this way as I knew the shell was a good one, and it had lots of history.
It’s had a full underside restoration, everything has been removed. All parts have been powder coated or renewed. Full list below. Literally, the only thing I have put back on the car that hasn’t been renewed or overhauled is the prop shaft and diff. The car drives really well. This is not a concourse car, it was never my intention to build the car that way. I put 4k miles on it last year after the engine build and I have put it on the road at the start of March this year just to try the stage 3 MSD Setup.
Things that I intended to do this year:
- Needs a 4wd lower dashboard. At some point it has had the 4x4 adjustable steering column fitted, and the 2wd lower dash doesn’t fit around the cowling properly, so I had to cut it a bit.
- There is no rot on any of the doors or sills, it has had a couple of doors painted in the past, some lacquer pealing around seals, but not that bad. Could do with Dent Devils to put some dints straight.
- Front bumper has paint cracking on it and could do with painting.
- Tappets could do with changing.
The good bits.
The shell is very good. When I stripped the underside, the only welding it needed was:
- Small section of chassis legs had holes in them. They were ground back to good metal and both inner and outer skins were replaced, red leaded, painted and sealed with anti-corrosion wax (Bilt Hamber Dynax S50)
- The sills are mint. Had a small 6” section replaced both sides on the rear corners. Again as above, replaced, red leaded and sealed. The rest of the sills both inner and outer are rot free.
- Rear arches have been repaired last year. The inner arches were mint so rather than separate the seams, they have been leaded and painted.
- All original Panels. Original front wings with date stamps and no rot. Inner wings are mint, no rust behind battery or expansion tank. No rust around the screen or scuttle area and no rust around the sunroof. There is a bit of rust on the underside of the sunroof itself, but none on the actual roof /bodywork.
Here’s a full list of what it’s had.
Engine
- New 200 block (re-honed) on standard bore, 4x4 pistons with new Mahle rings.
- Reground crank to .25 with new Vandervell bearings. (Crank and block were prepared by Gordon Scott of Durham RSOC).
- MSD Stage 3 Setup, with T34.48, brand new Bosch 803’s, new Webcon 3.5bar FPR and brand new genuine 3bar map sensor.
- Group A Head gasket and bolts. Full new seal and gasket kits throughout.
- New Valve stem oil seals last year as part of engine build.
- New Water pump, with belts.
- New alloy fuel lines with AN6 Braided Teflon fuel lines with Aeroquip fittings all the way through the car from pump to fuel rail.
- New Bosch 044 fuel pump with MSD loom.
- Recent sensor kit including CTS, Phase, amal valve, Air Temp and crank sensor.
- Denso IK27 Plugs
- New Blueflame Exhaust system with 4” tailpipe, including HKS Gaskets.
Drivetrain
- Gearbox has been rebuilt last year by Andy at G.E.A.R.S. It had a full new Gear set and bearings fitted at a cost of £600.
- Rear Diff has just been setup by Fostek Engineering. The crown wheel and pinion are fine, and the backlash has been setup and bearings preloaded. New Oil. There is play in the planet gears, which is causing slight movement in the O/S inner driveshaft. Been like that for the last 4k miles and never got worse.
- Driveshaft’s have been overhauled last year. All joints stripped cleaned, new boots, clips and grease.
- New Wheel bearings all round last year.
Chassis / Suspension
- Polybushed throughout with powerflex kit. Retained the Group A beam mounts to soften the ride a little.
- Graham Goode Racing rear beam mount kit stiffens up the rear bushes.
- Koni Shocks all round in good condition, with Apex 25mm springs. Sits close to factory height so doesn’t scrape on kerbs and bumps
- Has previously had a roll cage fitted. All mounting points are still in place should anyone want to refit one.
Brakes
- New brake callipers all round last year.
- New National Sport grooved front discs with standard pads
- New Standard rear discs and pads.
- New brake lines, and braided flexi pipes.
- New Handbrake cable
- Abs fully operational, no faults or dash lights!
Wheels
- Virtually new 17” Oz super T’s and Goodyear Eagle F1s. Few little nicks but otherwise mint.
Interior
- Full leather in good condition
- Stack Oil Pressure gauge
- Autometer Boost Gauge
- New headlining last year.
History
- See photo. The car was in December 2003 Fast Ford.
- I have hundreds of receipts including a bill of sale in 1990, most of the Tax discs since then and a complete folder of receipts to confirm all the work that has been done.
I have probably missed loads, but rest assured, the car has had virtually everything replaced or reconditioned. As previously stated, I haven’t got round to making the bodywork mint, but I would class the paint condition to be 7 out of 10. 10 being perfect (but I am highly critical of the condition of my cars). There is however no rot. The car only needs a few bits tidied and a dent man to work his magic.
Anyway, here are some pictures. I am looking for £6000. At that price, the car will come with a bunch of spares, as they will be of no use to me. There’s a set of original lattice wheels with decent tyres, and the Original MSD stage 1 setup amongst other stuff.
The car has been valued last year by an RSOC committee member @ £6250, and agreed by insurance company. Since then it has had the stage 3 upgrade, fuel lines etc.
Car is located in Northumberland. Serious buyers can contact me via PM and I will reply with my contact number. My number is issued by my employer, and I am not supposed to post it on the internet etc.

Nothing immediately mate. Had my for sale advert put together for a while, and took me nearly an hour tonight to click 'post' button. I have bought a second house as a bit of an investment and looking at a flat as well, and could do with the extra money. I will be spending the next few months renovating so wont have much time free. TBO if I dont get much interest at the asking price, I probably just leave it in the garage and use it the odd day. Seems a shame, and I cant really believe I have advertised it.
