saph cossie or evo 4?

Evo4's had a lot of problems with munching through their thrust bearings (aka "crankwalk") IIRC.
Undoubtably the better car in terms of handing, but personally I think at that end of the budget scale I would sooner buy a rwd saph, more fun and I bet it will hold its value better going forward from here.
So I am going to surprise myself, by saying "SAPH!"
Unless you want to be doing trackdays, in which case evo.

insurance is a big difference on cossies and evos, my evo 5 cost me Ł300 more than my escos
but the evo is an all round package of a car has all the luxurys, drives nice, good power, handling and braking
only downside if they go wrong they go wrong
servicing on engine and rear diff is vital
evo 4s as chip has mentioned has crank walk so id go for a 5 upwards if you can that way you get the wide arches etc aswell, 5s have the better interior that doesnt wear aswell
but mine has been reliable since september used everyday and abused everyday and it had a mis hap yesterday where the common heater matrix started leaking, which is a dash out job which just took me 5 hours to take it out lol

Yeah if it was a V it would be a different decision potentially.
With the IV the cossie wins not just on character (I still prefer a rwd saph for fun than an evo) but also on reliability!

Old saff for me.I hate the look of the evo 4s.
Go and test drive a evo and a saff and make your own mind up.
If the cossie has been looked after it will be reliable.

Driven both, and I'd say I prefer the sierra, don't get me wrong the evo is a better handling car but I just love the way sierras drive when your pushing them hard, so much more character as well but if I was buying one for the sole purpose of ragging it on track it would be the evo any day !
RWD saff, plenty of nice tuned looked after cars around for sensible cash, won't lose a penny & they are great fun to drive. Evos are great cars, undoubtedly "better" than the Ford, but IMHO the RWD saff is much, much more fun to drive...
im looking at 4-4.5k
Im a Ford man at heart and have since a little one wanted a Cosworth. ive driven an Evo 4 and it was fast and felt tight but i do fear it is rather "characterless" as are most cars when put to a cossie just because of the history the cars have.
Plus the fact that an evo in one form or another is a bit common place!
Reliability wise i never understand why people have this disillusion in my opinion that a YB is a poor engine. For years my dad and uncle ran Escort / 3Dr cosworth rally cars. Over the years they encountered very few problems. a well built cossie engine pushing 350 brake is just as reliable as anything else in my opinion!
Not too interested in a tracking the car as i rally so track days always a little tame.
Should i buy an Evo i feel ill getting the all too common "what shall i get next" within a few month!

Evo 4 looks horrible so I'd take the saph an has chip says will hold value better.
Evo v take a nice one and don't bother looking at a saph
Thats what I would do if it was me.

For your budget i would say a evo VI, A decent saph would be demanding more in the Ł6k region. Ive just bought a VI as it was the aggresive stance i liked. Evo 4 or a saph, The saph.

the 4s 5 and 6 use the same shell, only difference is bodykit on 5 and 6s and obviously better on each evolution with little upgrades
go for a saf at that money but take your time for one and check it over carefully

the Evo 5/6 look awesome! but looking at insurance theres a 1500 quid difference between a 4/cosworth and a 6!
No doubt at that money there may be some dogs about
