Default Mondeo ST TDCi - what you think?

Always been keen on these and now my mates wife is selling her black 54 plate and i'm tempted. Its bog standard and done 70k.

I know to watch for injector trouble and noisy DMFs but was interested to see how people rate them?

Cheers

They're great cars, when they are running well.

Complete pain in the twat when they go wrong.

Was looking at a TDCI on 70k that broke down last week, (I work in a main dealer) needs pump and 2 x injectors, they quoted something daft like Ł1800.

Bloke is scrapping it.

Stevens car is a nice one like and well looked after think you'd struggle to find a tidier one nice in the black too.

If it's any consolation the 2.2s seem to suffer from injector problems less than the 2.0.

The STs are really nice cars, and the 2.2 is a cracking engine.

They are fine until they go wrong. Then they can be big money to put right.

get one built in 2004 or later as they have corrected most of the injector/pump issues. Its the earlier ones that are more prone to failures

I bought my 54 plate ST over 4 years ago with 21k on it. It's now got 52k and I've had 2 sets of tires and 2 Tensioners. When it sounds like a tractor growling then you need to get the tensioner, pulley and belt changed otherwise it'll go again in under a year (thats why I had 2!) 45mpg all day long and 140 mph on a private road!!

The clips that hold them in place at the arches are pretty pathetic,if they burst the sides pop out a bit, don't think they drop tho

Droopy bumper syndrome does occur on these. Easily fixable with a drill and some self tappers! See mondeostoc.com for details.

2.0 TDCI is a totally different engine to the 2.2....

Had 3 ST tdci's now and they've all been spot on. My 2.0 tdci was the car that gave me a few niggles

I got mine to replace my ST200. It's spot on, just saving up for a decat and a remap, which should make it go a bit better. There are lots of stories about dmfs and injectors, didn't put me off! Ignore the scare stories and just get one!

I had one, replaced the egr and handbrake cable. Usual aux belt tensioner rattle. As said can be big money to put right if it goes wrong, as any old diesel.

I'd advise buying a warranty if I'm honest!
