ECU woes- key to ECU coding (Zetec/RS1800)
Hi All,
following advice on my project, I am starting to understand why my motor is not starting.
It came with a blown ECU, 2FBC code, so I sourced a working one of eBay.
Plugged it in, and it just cranks over.
My key had a red transponder in it- do I have to the new ECU to synced to the key?
How is this done- and whats the cheapest way of doing it?
Trying to get my working ECU coding feature deleted-just emailed this chap:
http://www.the-ecu-doctor.co.uk/
Other option is to get the original fixed, but its not looking cheap, plus might not be doable.
Will see what he can do.
Any other suggestions? Can the key be recoding to the ECU?
Thanks all,
Kam

Cheers James- might pop into the local Ford dealer. Only problem is I have only have one key with the red transponder on it.
Confused on what to do next- was going to get my ECUs sent off to the ECU doctor, but been speaking to a very knowledgeable chap in Oz who has given a detailed answer:
From the sounds of it you have a pats ecu setup on the car. The red chip in your key is a pats chip that the transponder ring will pick up a signal from then the ecu will allow spark to function either from it's internal edis module or if an external one through that. Pats will cut the fuel pump and spark so these are the two things you need to check. Simplest way is to use a multimeter on the coil pack multiplug. The centre wire will be a 12v feed and the 2 wires either side of it will be earths that switch on and off to get each side of the coil pack to fire. So just pop your multimeter leads in and crank the engine whilst watching to see if your eating any reading at all. Fuel pump is the same but it should prime when your first turn the ignition on so do that check with a multimeter first!
BUT if you have a pats loom fitted and you've been trying to bypass it by simply fitting a pre pats ecu it will not work as the loom pin out differ. You would need a pre pats loom to go with a pre pats ecu. These are very simple to wire up, with only needing 2 solid lives, 2 switched, an earth strap and one wire for the tacho output. They are all off the same engine bay plug too so tis very easy to put into a car especially one that's just a dedicated track car.
But then again you can't assume you have pats just because the key has a red chip as for all you know the ignition barrel has been changed by the previous owner at some stage and they just got one from the strap yard. You need to take the cowling off and see if there is a transponder ring around the barrel to be sure.
Zippy is turning out to be ballache and a half! I have not even got the car to switch on yet!
