Default Mobil 1 and a panel filter in a 2001 Escort van??

Hi all,
Just wondering about peoples opinions on oil and air filter for my daily driver work horse Escort van.
It's a 1.8 Endura diesel engined 2001 escort van with 116,000 on the clock.
Depend on how I drive it I get between 420-480 miles to £70 fully loaded with tools, cable ect (im an Electrician).
Now, I had an M reg 1.8 endura diesel engined Escort van years ago and put petrol engined Mobil 1 in it due to having enough left over from a brief E30 320 BMW experience and it totally transformed the way the van started, run and drove and I even (no word of a lie) got 50mpg out of it sitting at 60mph on a run! ( Mobil 1 advertises better mpg)
The reason I bring this up is because a fair few people said that even with cheap oil it would have run the same due to it being fresh oil but im not so convinced.
The air filter question is because I had a H reg MR2 n/a and I put a piperX induction kit on it and it improved MPG both around town and on a run!
So do you lot think I should stick with the £20 oil off the shelf and paper air filter or take the plunge and get £50 Mobil1 and £35 panel filter for hopefully better MPG and smoother running??
All opinions welcome good or bad
Cheers, John
