Just after a bit of help with my mate mk4 golf. Its a 1.6 16v. It has had a water leak on the car for over a year and instead of topping it up with coolent he has just been topping it up with water.
i got a phone call the other week off him saying when he is starting the engine it is spinning over fast.
To cut a long story short i think the water has frozen. He took the head off cause it sounded like there was no compression. There is no damage to the valves or rockers. We have built the engine back up and.now it wont start. Its getting a spark and fuel.We toed it round the block and had it running for a few mins but now it still wont start.Does anyone know anything about these engines.
thanks.

Just had another look at the car. When the spark plugs are removed and you crank the engine over water comes flying out of the plug holes.
Engine looks fooked to me.Gonna look for a engine for it.

I have an engine in perfect condition for one of those, came out of a 56k miler and ran fine, had been front ended, the box felt dodgy though which could either have been impact or just their a bit crap anyway.
HOWEVER.
it's been in my "mates" garage for a year and I'm not 100% it's still there and sadly today I've come back up to work in Aberdeen.
Also, its in port Talbot so miles from you, would need paletting I would suggest.
There's a subframe and the box and shafts, from memory all ancillaries and I'd like £100 for the lot to get something back on the ridiculous amount of money I paid for the car that was "light" damaged, yet when arrived looked like it was hit at about 200mph!!!
He'd get the pallet costs back in scrapping all the stuff on it,think there were struts attached as well, calipers etc.

Ps I have driven the car round the yard and the engine really was perfect, very quiet.
I've heard these aren't the best motors vw ever made either so may be a bit rare to get a good one.
Car was s reg mk4.
Got me thinking now though, was it an 8 or 16v?
Oh bollocks!!!

Same as any other engine, so long as it has fuel compression and a spark it WILL run!
Topping it up with water it not a good idea at all, anti-freeze does not only stop freezing, it also contains corrosion inhibitor, without it, the internals of the engine will corrode, especially anything if it is constructed of Aluminium.
If water is coming out the cylinders, this is of course what is preventing it from starting, the block has most likely cracked!

We found out why it wouldnt start. We took the spark plugs out and when.we cracked the engine over it was chucking water out of the spark plug holes. The lad got another engine and the car is all up and running.I think the head or block must be crackes. The head looked ok when we took it off.
