Default Anyone got a steel garage?

Just wondering if anyone had a prefab steel garage?

Currently looking at prefab garages as I'm looking to build an extra garage and really liking the look of steel units at the moment.

I had a look into wooden ones when we were thinking of moving to somewhere that didnt have a garage, seemed like a better idea in terms of temperature than the metal ones?

I don't fancy wood and for what they are, I think large wooden buildings are expensive. If I don't go for steel it would have to be concrete, but either way I'd be wanting a steel access door, aluminium windows and an electric roller shutter on the front.

Was about 10K ish for 60 square foot which was the size I was looking at.
That was similar to the steel ones I found.

Fair enough though if its not something you like, I just felt for residential use they looked a bit less industrial than the metal ones.

The only wooden I've seen that I liked the look of was this one

http://www.timbergarages.com/garage-...nt+6.5m+x+5.0m

but I'm after something almost twice that length.

I'm no fan of wood and would be worried that it wouldn't last and think of the greater fire risk. I also think I could get a steel kit for less and wouldn't begrudge paying the same price for something I think would be more durable anyway.

Definately with you on the fire risk, can really see why that is a concern.
Not so convinced on the durability though, properly treated decent wood lasts pretty much indefinately anyway and if you have chipped paint/coatings on the steel its going to rot anyway, so either should last well if maintained but wont if neglected.

Not that it matters if it isnt what you want anyway as that makes it all acedemic, but they were available a lot longer than that as I was looking at them in both 20' by 30' and 30' by 20' as 20' by 30' is good for getting four small cars in but 30' by 20' is better for working on 3 in, and I was undecided which was more important to me with the footprint I had available if we had gone for the house we were looking at.

I bought a yard master metal garage and suffice to say I sent it back, it looked a right mare to construct, me and my pal attempted to put it together, all day and all we done was the roof beams, they look like a big meccano set

I had to send it back because I didn't get planning permission to put it up and some idiot neighbour objected to me putting it up even after he said it was ok, he moved after I punched him around a bit and knocked him through his front door one day

Starting to sway towards a concrete one now. Looking at a 34'3" x 24'6". Not as big as what I was first thinking about, but big enough for the extra space I need really. If I need extra space inside to work on anything I can always move a couple of cars outside.

I'd fuck the garden off completely in favour of one big industrial unit if I had my way, but I wouldn't get away with that. Think this will be a good compromise.

would you need planning permission for all the ones listed? timber / pre fab are kinda termporary. would the steel one be classed the same?

Yeah I'm sure along as it is 5 m away from the house if it's going to be over 30m2 your going to need building regs and I think the height is restricted not sure what the height is.

the steel roofs do drip as the collect condensation. I used 50mm thick polysterene to insulate mine and it stopped it.

I was looking at a steel 8m square shed 4m high in my yard, as above it's a fair distance from my house would I need permission to chuck one of these up as it's kind of temporary isn't it. My main concern was also the drips in the winter too

They are Jimmy ! I had one at my old place, the biggest shed they made at the time (and it was big !) and what a fucking nightmare to put up....my mate is an engineer and he couldnt make head nor tail of it. Two days it took us just to get the frame up.

As for metal garages, I personally think that's a bad idea. Condensation in my old shed was a nightmare, I had to line the entire inside with polystyrene sheets just to stop everything getting soaked with water dripping off the inside of the roof.

Never again. Wood is much better than metal but you really want brick / concrete with a proper roof.
