Can it be done successfully with an adapter? If so any recommendations?

does it have a serial port? I've recently fitted a meajolt to my escort and had massive problems getting my laptop to talk to it via serial/usb adaptor. The cheap ebay adaptors arent worth the money. In the end i had to use an expensive one from triggerwheels and use an older laptop running windows 2000/xp. I know its slightly different but it caused me big hasstle for weeks!.......in my opinion if you do use an adaptor buy a good quality one.

I've been using this adapter for 9 years now (the same original one that I bought all that time ago) and I have never ever failed to connect to anything or had issues with communications dropping out. It's expensive but after trying many of the cheap shitters out there this is in a completely different league. Using this over the others was like night and day.

I used this specifically to map an Omex 600 ECU but the ECU communicated at quite a slow speed for what I had it set to. Had to slow the baud rate down a little but it worked perfectly.

You can probably buy it cheaper elsewhere as RS always have retail listed on their site.

RS Cable, PC USB to RS232C converter cable £145!! holy shit Daz thats expensive!! Not just yet.....

 

It is expensive but it works. It's industrial grade electronics so it's designed to be immune to electrical noise and disturbances created by other electrical and electronic equipment (which also includes alternators, starter motors, wiper motors and ignition circuits which are very noisy equipment due to their nature). It's also very fast and stable. I had no end of trouble with the cheap £15/£20 ones and then used one of these units then promptly never used another one again. I use it day in day out and have done with increasing frequency since 2003/4 and it's never let me down connecting to a varying array of devices. Back then it was "only" £125!

If you can find something cheaper that will do the job you need it to then fair play. If anyone ever asks about RS232 converters I always recommend this item as it simply works which I can't say for any of the cheap versions I have used. It works on XP, Vista and Windows & too.

 

Appreciate the reply Daz, i only need to get a map from an existing omex ecu and email it back to Andy at Omex for him to check a couple of things. I wont be mapping my own stuff i doubt as i dont have the knowledge or skills so no need for such sophistication just yet.

 

No worries. It's not worth spending 145 just to extract a map but if you ever start mapping or fault finding with serial comms then I'd recommend it all day long.

 

I found that if you had the ignition on and then started the laptop with the serial cable to USB cable connected then it worked fine!

 

Cheap/expensive ones of any make can be hit and miss.

Ive found the PCMCIA to serial converters more reliable though as far as compatibility goes.
