Let me just introduce myself, I am a dutch mechanical engineering student and i was looking for a car to restore. I didn't want to pay a lot so i've searched around and found a supposed 1979 Ford Fiesta 950 for under €300. I checked the license plate and the data says it's a 950 'custom'. The weirdest part is the data says it has rear wheel drive. So today I went to take a look at the car. The car was a bit of a mess, the front side was pretty rusted but the rest was still pretty neat. So i popped the hood and i saw what i believe was a drive shaft to the rear. I testdrived it but the 0.95 liter engine didn't have a lot of power, so i didnt really feel if it's rear or front. Only at one point where i turned and accidently gave a lot of gas and the steering wheel centerd real fast. But my question is: is it possible that this really is a rear wheel Ford Fiesta?

EDIT: Also in the cabbin there is a height difference in the middle(gear stick, handbrake) throughout the length of the car.

 

engin mounted transversly therefore would assume fwd. were there and shafts going to the fron wheels?

Didn't really look any further. I'm almost sure of buying so when I'm going to get back with the seller, i'll look.
But the acceleration pushing the steering wheel into centerd position when i turned isn't that i sign? I didn't dump the clutch and i'm sure that i didn't give enough gas to actually drift (if it was a rwd). btw: I'm not so familiar with driving cars, I obtained my license just over a year ago.


But it isn't usual right when a shaft runs through the middle of the car? No pictures because i haven't bought the car yet.

 

all cars have self centering steering (some self centre quicker than others), its the way the front suspension is designed so don't take this as a sign of rear wheel drive

get under the car and have a look for drive shafts. i'm willing to bet its front wheel drive.

 

did you not think to look under the back to see if it had a rear diff & drive shafts?

 

that picture is RWD then

totaly standard other than a RWD conversion then?
