Default Suspension Issue

Hi all.

I think I have an issue with my suspension.
The suspension works as far as I know, its very soft at the rear which it always has been, I assume it was supposed to be like that, the front goes down if I push on it, but doesn't bounce back up as if the shocks were worn out, but when ever I go over something in the road, its as though the suspension isn't absorbing the small bump and it sounds like a thud. Thats the best I can explain it.
For example, earlier I drove over a slighly raised man hole cover in the road, unavoidable, and as I felt the car go over it, the car sort of went up and I heard the thud, as it went up, and down.

Just to add, my car has done almost 97K miles, so its getting on a bit, I'm assuming something has worn out, but I don't know what.
