Default what to do

my m8's apparently had the HG go (according to the mechanics), they striped the engine, sent the head off to be skimmed etc, reassembled it and now it wont start, my m8 has now decided that he should have just fitted another engine (well duh!), anyway the garage want £900 for the work carried out, so where does he stand, does he have to pay for something which hasn't been done properly?

He went in for a diagnosis, was quoted £900 to have the car working again. Doesn't matter what they do to it now, only pay up the £900 when the car works again!

wasn't running m8 (apparently), it was sat in a carpark and he got them to pick it up and take it to their garage, apparently when he (my m8) left the car in the car park it was running ruff as fuck (but running), he then made the noob mistake of giving them the keys and handily when they arrived it was a non-runner, so bugger knows.

they can stop you taking it back if you refuse to pay. offer to pay something to cover the work your happy with then take it. if they phone the police the police wont stop you from taking the car back as it then becomes a civil dispute over amount outstanding rather than simple non payment.
the garage owner then has to persue you through the courts.in fact it can be better if you phone the police yourself asking them to attend as you fear the garage may turn nasty.
then once you have your car back burn the place down.
