Default struggling to start??

car in question is 2.8 xr4x4

il try and explain without it sounding too confusing..

basically ive noticed that when i try and start it up i always have to seem to put revs on it otherwise if i just start up the car without revs and just on the key...it'll fire up then the revs just drop then it'll cut out?

but if i start it on the revs for a few secs then it idles okay by itself..

any ideas at all?

Isn't this normal? I thought you should start these cars up with your foot slightly depressed on the accelerator pedal. Sure it says to do this in the owners manual.
