Default Ford Transit Mk6 wont start

Hi all,I have a 53plate transit pick up.It has the 125 engine in it.My problem started when the engine suddenly cut off.The diesel light had come on 15miles back so naturally I assumed the diesel had run out.Was already approaching an Asda Fuel station so just pushed it in.Filled up with diesel.I noticed soon after I used their pump one of them came and put cones on it to stop anyone else using the same pump.I didnt think much of it then.Nway, tried to bleed the diesel and when it was flowing out of the injectors I nipped them up.It still wouldn't start.Nway drained out the fuel suspecting it was contaminated but I used the same fuel in a Merc that was in my garage and out of diesel too and the Merc ran perfectly well.Changed filter, flushed the system, fresh diesel but still wouldnt start.however with a bit of Brake cleaner the engine fires up,smokes badly for a few mins then clears up.I can use it the whole day as long as I dont switch it off.Once I turn it off it wont start unless I use the brake cleaner. Its a vicious cycle.I also noticed I I let it idle on its on it lasts about 2 mins then cuts out.Tried bleeding till no air at injectors, filled up filter manually etc but still only starts on brake cleaner. My local garage reckons the pump is gone???If it was an airlock surely it would clear after a day of driving? Also noticed the truck is lacking power, only goes up to 60mph when previously it would comfortably do 80-85.Please help

you idealy need to get it pluged in to some form of IDS computer, could be pump, filter housing, vapour valve on back of the pump, pressure release valve on fule rail... ect lol

Took the Transit for a diagnostic. The garage says it was the diesel pump that's knackered. On the way to take the pump out they realised one of the chain tensioners is broken, probably when I tried to tow it for around 15mins.So advised to might as well put in new tensioners and new chain. The garage invited me to have a look at what they have done so far and its no diy job.bonnet, headlamps, grill, bumper all out, manifolds etc.So just forked out 860 pounds in parts so far.Anticipating a bill of another couple of hundreds in labour costs.1 year warranty though with the job .

I think the bump starting damaged the chain tensioners.tried fourth gear,3rd,2nd then 1st. and when i tried it in 1st it wasnt happy at all!!!!heard all sorts of moans and groans from the engine and exhaust. Definitely wont try it again.Nway, new pump, new chain and tensioners now and she is up and running again. She is a recovery truck by the way so she will be getting back to what she does best.Thank you all for your contributions,Retro_al,will have a look at the Mk7.Someone suggested a Mercedes to me but no,its the Fords we are passionate about is it not!!!
