Default Advice: whats next for my YB?

Hi all,

After recently buying my first Cosworth (3door) I would like some advice and explanation of a few things. The engine was rebuilt by Butch 2k ago and has a brand new TT turbo.

Its a standard 3door YB. brand new .5 oversize Mahle pistons. rods and crank cleaned/checked/balanced. standard head/cams cleaned with new lifters/guides/stem seals. 500 cooler. swirlpot and oil breather. grpA breather. grpA headgasket. Dark green injectors. MSD chip to suit and MSD set up July 2011. brand new TT "sierra 2wd stage3" turbo.

Firstly, can anyone tell me what sort of power I would expect to see this run at?

What is the spec of the TT turbo. Is it a T35.68 housing??

Does the rebuild sound good enough to run current BHP safely and realiably?

What would be the next step of tune for it? Diffrent injectors/turbo/chip or what?

Also its running L1. When would this be need to be upgraded?

Thanks in advance,

Ross.

just use it and enjoy it

i was constantly upgrading and fucking about with my saffs, thing i regret most is not using any of them because they were always off the road being "upgraded"!!
or fucked with smashed diffs.

dont go mad, love the car and be in it as much as possible.

500bhp i had was a ball ache and just destroyed everything arround it and cost massive lack of use

p.s L1 = spark cut rev limmit = fuckin awesome noise

p.p.s i used to work with Lindsay, i.e lindsay shaw of shaw speed, top bloke and supreme knowledge

If you want more power I'd go for Siemans 55lb, and mapped by NMS. My mate had his done and it felt really fast!

Exactly what sean says.... just use it and love it

Mine was never any bother at stage 3, then I went greys and more boost and it was fine bar the odd niggle here and there..... then I went for a full rebuild for more power and 2 1/2 year later its still in bits on the drive and will be a good while yet before it sees the roads again due to me finding the dreaded tin worm . In the time Ive owned it its spent longer off the road than on it

Totally agree with the above. It's not just the time and the breakages. Once you go above like 380bhp it starts getting pricey

get the car set up, enjoy the new car, dont go chasing power figures, dont go buying uprated parts you dont need and if you wanna know more research the forums you'll generally find most drivers enjoy the set up you have, start going over this too far and you'll be into deep pocket syndrome

Agree with Mat, will be fun as it is.... my first Sapph was 274bhp when I was 19, wasnt actually mine but it may as well have been as I drove it more than the owner, and it was ample and I loved it. Then I got my own Sapph when I was 21 and that was 329bhp, Ive had a few since then and the stage 3 ones have been the best fun tbh.

Just to add the best advise I can give ismeale sure you choose a tuner very carefully, doing abit research before hand because it can end in empty pockets and heartache...

Cheers lads.

Ive bought the car to fully use and enjoy it but i was wondering what the next step was. Curiosity really, for later years.

Ive went from a 150bhp fwd fiesta to a 340 rwd 3 door. Its some upgrade, but i have a massive passion for anything YB powered.

Gary I miss mine, got the cossie itch again
Might have to do what I said I'd never do and buy another one lol.

55's and nms map on a t34 will be ample power.

55s t34.63 should be 400bhp with the right cams. If your pistons have cutouts get some bd14s and 16s go for a l8 ecu (u can have launch controll anti lagg if u got right turbo closed loop etc etc)a new inlet will prob help u out at that power range. There's a group buy going on at mo so get a bargain.

Only prob with above spec is gearbox has to be decent and you'l defo need a new clutch and prob a diff. Thats why people say it starts to get expensive over 380

Thanks Luke. Just the kind of info i was after.

It wont be happening for a while but id like to go for blacks and a new chip. Is there any reason why and L1 would run those?

No probs and there's no harm in planning for the future mate. im no expert on ecu's but it should run blacks. Your better of asking a tuner as everyone has diffdrent ideas on what cam's work with diffdrent turbo's etc.

Do a search on here for l8 ecu's as there's loadsa info on them. Basicly there just newer and more intelligent so u can use more features.
Some people go aftermarket like omex as they have things as standard where the l8 ecu are all add on extras

The best road spec for little money is a T34 with 55s on ideally a L8 ECU running closed loop..
Will make around 380bhp on a std YB at 32psi.

We can help if you would like.

we can give a refund on any of our chips if you have an invoice.

Most parts you have will work just fine at the new power level.

Haha. Your going to take the title for "any oppertunity of a photo" the amount of times u put the pic up of your goodies

Seriously it should be a weapon but interesting u only want torque, 400 i believe i read... But surely torque and bhp are related?? Often wanted to ask that question

Not really, the saying goes BHP sells cars, torque wins races.

HP is a calculation of torque so they do have a relation, my advise would be to read Stus article he done on for "Fast Ford" (On MSD's website), he explained the two in great depth.

It's kind of hard to explain but if you have ever driven a Diesel you will can kind of understand it, Diesels generate lots of low down torque which is why they make good candidates for towing as they have a lot of "Pulling power".

I personally would rather have a torquey engine than a powerful one as it means the car is nicer to drive, i.e. less changing gears etc, power is all top end which in a lot of scenarios you don't get to exploit!

To the OP I would say around 320HP but it's impossible to say as you don't know what size turbo you have, also knowing the boost pressure can give a rough idea, a T34 is a hybrid turbo and an Escos turbo and fitted as an upgrade. Then you have the exhaust housing which is typically a .48, .55 or a .63.

The bigger the exhaust housing the more boost it will be able to generate but the downside is the lag will increase.

L1 is standard management, only would need to upgrade to L8/P8 IF you want things like anti-lag,LC,CL etc and then in turn requires turbo/ISCV mods as well as a complete new chip which you have just brought!

I am nearly 23 and had my Saph since I was 19, there is no reason why they should be any different to drive than any other car, provided your sensible.

What all 3 pics...... Take another fail...

You have read correct.... I do want torque.... And as martyn says torque wins races.....and hopefully those parts will get me off the lights quicker than a corsa...

hahaha i still stand by my statement, even if its for a mm

Can u not see my sig. It says bhp sells cars torque wins races!?? But for example u cant have a 200hp car with 400lbs of torque as u still need power to generate torque weather its low down mid range or top end if u get what im saying?
