I'm wanting to get some more free HorsePower from my Engine, so i thought i'd get a better InterCooler.

I have the standard RWD one on at the moment, but I can get hold of one of these:

Do they increase lag to any significant degree? Should I get one with slightly smaller dimensions?

 

What's specs your car firstly mate...?

 

Errr...GT2876r, Siemens Injectors (803's couldn't keep up), ...a few other parts, but I can't really know what would be of signifcance to the question...(Forced Inductions all new to me). What parts/systems were you thinking in particular?

 

It will defo make your car faster.It did with mine before it got mapped.Make sure your fueling is ok too.

 

These are cheaper and better... And the difference is night and day mate when you change from OE to a 500 spec cooler...can't say i ever noticed a difference even tho they might be ever such a slight one in lag.

I have RS500 IC waiting to get installed to my stage 2 Cossie (greens, T3 1.3 bar). I heard its noticeable power upgrade, but it should also make a difference to my AFR? I don't have lambda so I should probably book time to mapping specialist to check the AFR after the installation of IC just in case. How radically did it change your air-to-fuel mixture if you didn't have lambda?

 

Shouldnt make a very significant different to AFR as the temp sensor is after the intercooler.
Its not greatly different to just it being a colder day out effectively.

 

Hey mate. You from NZ? Your car looks similar spec to mine. Mine has a pro alloy RS500 Intercooler fitted and I definitely wouldn't say it was laggy. In saying that I went from a maxxed out T3 with a standard Intercooler to a Garrett GT2876R and 500 cooler in one bite so I haven't driven the combo you have. What made you change injectors? I'm considering the same move along with a good electronic boost controller.

 

Its all to do with the charged air tempreture. A larger intercooler should cool the air better than a smaller one. Colder air = more power plus its safer. If you're running high intake tempretures then you run the danger of getting detination problems. Id say get a good quality RS500 style intercooler and get the fueling mapped

The Intercoolers are out of stock. While i'm waiting, i'm going to put in an RS500 style radiator.

Since it is slightly thicker and I will be using the original fans, will that be too close to the pulleys on the engine? Anything I need to take into account?

 

...and the new radiator has two inlets/outlets, not like the original which has three.

Looking through old posts, I see that the third hole isn't necessary, but what WAS it for? I know I took a hose off it when I took the engine out, but I can't remember what for!

 

Dump valve outlet IIRC, been a long time since ive even seen a standard rwd cooler though TBH so i might be wrong!

 

I'm talking about the Radiator now, not the Intercooler.

I've decided to still give the RS500 style cooler a go.

However, where does it bolt in?

From looking at the pictures, it looks as though it's meant to go where the radiator goes (same mounting arms)...although there are two similar holes in front of where the radiator goes, but it doesn't look as though those holes are far enough apart two accommodate both...

P.S, i'm having trouble finding a supplier who will ship me to N.Zealand (for a decent price), so if someone knows of anyone, please let me know.

 

Yes mate it mounts to the front set of holes in you chassis in front of rad ,try mike r at r@b motorsport, woodfords garage or matt lewis ,they will all ship to you no problem

I bought the RS500 style Intercooler and Radiator...

Both fit fine, but not together! It's the mounting tab for the fans on the radiator that's the problem. It clashes with the intake pipe on the intercooler. I was thinking of somehow mounting the radiator a lot lower. Or is there some other trick?

I wanted to hard mount the intercooler (not using those rubber dampers). That would make the intercooler sit a little higher, but I still need a bit more of a height difference between the two.

...And I didn't want the welds on the mounting arms to break from not using the rubber dampers.

 

Definitely use the rubbers, the chassis of the car can move around in hard driving and will transfer the stress to your intercooler which is effectively sitting like a brace between your chassis rails. I've not heard of it happening, but like you say, not using rubbers COULD cause eventual fatigue fractures. It's like bending a piece of metal backwards and forwards a bunch of times, eventually it shears off.

I had a similar issue installing my RS500 cooler in a 2WD Saff. I bought a cheap one off EBay and it didn't fit. Had to get the brackets custom modified to fit the radiator mounts, AND, the inlet/outlet sizes were incorrect. Also, you will need a way of plumbing your factory dump valve back in, OR, change to an aftermarket one. The factory ones leak too (at higher boost). I ran an HKS Sequential with no problems (plus they sound wicked), and had a guy weld the alloy dump valve mount onto my intercooler pipe on the outlet side. Was quite sexy actually haha. Other thing you can do is buy a silicone hose from the cooler outlet to the throttle body with a dump valve take off on it.

Definitely recommend getting a good quality one. I paid more than a good one once I'd paid for the modifications anyway. Most big sellers will ship to NZ (I got mine posted there as that's where I owned the Saff. UK shipping is the BEST too! (In my experience)

Check with the seller before you buy. A tuner would be a good person to buy for, as they've likely fitted them before, and can tell you how best to fit one up, or recommend one to buy that fits spot on.
