Well not as such, but thats what it sounds like..

Basically a friend had a new backbox and mid section fitted to his ford escort 1.6 mk6 at the weekend, about 4 months before that he had a new catalyser put on it.

Since he has had the new mid section and backbox put on, when you rev the car up it starts popping and banging, and then pops and bangs as it comes down the revs?

He took it back and there is no leaks, checked the CAT the cat is working fine, and we aswell as the exhaust place are as confused equally as to why its doing it?

The car runs fine, drives fine, just its popping and banging on the exhaust?

Any ideas?

 

possibly coilpack on its way out?

 

We did check all the electricals and what not, it was recently serviced, and ran fine before the exhaust was changed, like i say it ran the same before as it does now with the new exhaust, the only difference is the popping and banging, its a completely standard exhaust system too, lol

 

badly made parts? a box with baffles but not packing so any fumes had the ability to burn when they get together

does it do it more when hot or cold?

tell em to replace the bits of crap pipe they fitted, poor quality exhaust can last less than a year, i had a backbox on a 1.6si and it was holed before the next mot after it was fitted

 

if there is leak in the pipe it can cause a backfire, check all the joints. fresh air mixing with the exhaust gases can cause the pop

 

Theres no leaks in it, the garage had it off and refitted it, and then we took it off and refitted it.. still does it, guess theres summet up with the insides of the exhaust itself then, he got 12 months guarantee with it, told him to take it back and ask them to fit another exhaust but hes not the most ballsy type of lads ! It does it more when its hot than cold..

Its just weird how it only started AFTER the exhaust was replaced, nothing else has been touched, ive even checked all the exhaust sensors and wiring and they havent been accidentally damaged or anything!

One of the most frustrating things ever is when you try and repair the most simple of jobs on a car and end up causing ten times more of a headache!

He pulled up outside mine earler and usually beeps the horn to let me know to get by the intercom to buzz him into the flat, but this time he decided to redline the car so it popped and banged.. made me lol hard..

 

I would say it's down to a crappy cheap and cheerful Kwik Fit esque exhaust.
