Default Squeak / squeal when disengaging starter motor?

Noticed my car makes an odd noise when I start it, only does it when it's cold, is fine when warm.

The starter turns and the engine fires up fine, but when you let go of the key the starter makes almost like a high pitched metallic screech, I guess you could relate it to finger nails down a black board. Only does it for a split second as starter disengages.

Any idea what it could be? Starter on its way out or flywheel ring gear knackered

Cheers

Rich

Starter motor I would say, I should think the "Dog" isn't disengageing from the engine when it should hence the sound of it being spun by the engine.

My focus does this too, when cold too, just sticky starter motor, early signs of imminent failure

Take the starter off and give it a good clean.Clutch dust could be causing the noise.

Is this not a sign that DMF is on its way out, my pal had something similar on his transit and it transcribed the DMF was starting to go, also started to get a little vibration. Also i had a mondeo which made a similar noise and that had recent had DMF and clutch before i got it, i am led to believe that when these flywheels start to fail they can wear the starter out aswell.

Hopefully cleaning your starter up sorts it.
