Default Check my 6 year old KONI Shocks, SHOCKING LOL.

After fitting my new discs Wednesday, I lower the car and there is a bit of a bang to which I thought was the spring just sitting in again but after a few hundred yards, a massive amount of smoke was pouring out the left wheel arch.
Here is why.

Thanks to all that helped and supplyed the parts and time needed to fit new Shocks and springs.
Car on a flatbed once they realised its a 4x4 after inicially sending a Merc Sprinter hoping to just lift an tow. Lowered too much lol.

The just holding on side.

The other which with 1 slight hit of a hammer once removed collapsed too.

Shocks off. Look at them Shocking,Get it. We all said it didnt we lol.

Fueling up the helpers lol.

Could you convert them to coilovers now? Do you park your car in a pond?

There's only one thing more shocking than that, and that's the caliper / pad colour combo!

Pretty terrible though, you tried contacting Koni?

I like yellow stuff pads as they last forever and I already painted the calipers red years ago with standard black pads.I like it lol. Might go and spray then aluminium colour one day to get it even more standard looking. Work in progress lol.
Thinking about contacting them. I want to speak to the dealer the old owner got them from first to see what they will say.

I knew they were rusted but not penitrably rusted. Your right there though. I think if I had not changed my brake discs that afternoon that happened I would have been a gonna. Lucky me.

Muscle and a drill to get it off.

That's shocking in deed. Don't they have a lifelong warranty or something?

Oh, and you're not the first guy ever to have their car "lowered":

1999 Merc...

Found this on the road

Was looking for a thread on how to 'refinish' konis.
Have a set that may be the dogs round corners but look crap, do they use
watercolour paints? They are certainly not durable as the
14 year sachs on my car are in better nick than the near
new konis I picked up.
Yellow hammerite smooth looks crap, nowhere near the right
shade so any ideas how to repaint these with something
that my dog couldn't lick off in two minutes?
Pair of GAZ rears make these look like cheap s---

Si74. I would paint them in hamerite gloss black etc etc. at the end of the day they are not going to be seen really, so as long as you know they are coated well and will last that would all that matters to me.

Glenn. she handled very nicely but now i have the standard ones on i cant really tell the difference lol. I have front and rear struts so thats probably mainly helping out the handling anyway.

If i were you lol i would get rid of those konis. I will never get them now after seeing mine after such a short life span. If anything i will buy some GAZ coili'es again next time round. Wish i never sold my old ones now he he.

Kossienutter

I had a set of gaz coilovers fitted to my saph.

3 seals burst in less than a month. i have the shocks still so can get you some pics if you want to see age/condition

They have poor customer service and you have to pay a courier to return them for them to check them over then tell you if they are going to repair them or not as its at their discression. The company i got them from said they had to be sent to gaz by myself.

I gave up with them in the end and fitted new konis. Beleive me they are so much better.

I would never buy another gaz product.

Your choice is yours m8. good luck in which road you choose.

Regards, Stephen

blimey thats a shock about the gaz ones they are ment to be one of The best. (must stop these puns lol). I shall stay with the standard ones for now. I say avoid the konis for now lol as i am supprised (wanted to say shocked then) they didnt last long but if i was to go back to konis i would imediattly paint over them so they have a good paint seal so the rot and road crap wont get the better of them.
the konis i had were good handing wise. maybe the ones on my car were a single pair that were not built to good standard as the others which are out there.

I think that if you buy Koni shocks new you get a lifetime warranty for them. With failures like these I would contact Koni.
