Does that grand include the cost of insurance?

If it's your first car then you need to try insurance quotes at the same time as trying to choose a car.

Not sure your age mate but classic car insurance is the way forward if you are buying a car of a certain age.

Depends on your age mate. To be honest if you're only 17 and this is your first car I would get something as cheap to insure as possible. Look at the 3 cylinder Corsas, they're utter fucking wank but cheap to insure and you won't be tempted to mod it and waste money.

At 17 mate just get something cheap to insure, even on a wanky 900cc Fiat Chunkychicken you'll be paying the fat side of £2k for insurance

3 door, Base spec, small engined Mk3 or 4 fiesta. or Mk4 escort.

can still play with the looks over the time of owning it then and not batter your insurance.

MK4 fiesta 1.25 16v pretty reliable, nippy for a first time driver, comfortable and millions to choose from. You could go for the mk5 whick looks better but then would you be getting a minter car for the money in the mk4 and some pennies to throw at some little mods??

Pick a good colour and get one that is as rot free as possible as this costs £££ to sort and with clean bodywork, thatway you can polish it up and keep it super clean.

A million and one things you can do in terms of styling, but I like the simple look.

Even this looked smart

and some others

fiesta 1.25 is a good call, very nippy little motors

you can get a good puma for a grand, but insurance will be ridiculous

That red mk4 fiesta looks mint.

I would go for a mk5 fiesta and like people have said the 1.25 16v engines are nippy for what they are.

Hopefully me and the wife will be selling ours next year cause we want a focus.

There's loads you could get.... I would try for one of these:
Mk2 Fiesta, Mk3 or 4 escort or Fiesta xr2i. I think the MK4 Escorts (i.e. 1.3's populars etc) are becoming popular on the forums it seems so that could be a nice car to get. You can pick them up really cheap!

An XR2i as a first car at 17? The premium on that would be painful in the same way as having your eyelids filled with table salt.

Don't think you can get classic policies until you have 3 years experience, certianly most I called wanted you to be at least 21

You are probably right... Although it's best to check, it might not be all that bad. A 17yo lad lives opposite me and he has a mini cooper- it cant be any more than one of those for example.

No point checking mate, it will be uninsurable for a 17 year old.
You will almost certainly find said lad has got mum or dad to insure it and is a named driver so in actual fact not only is his insurance invalid both he and his parents are commiting insurance fraud.

mk4/mk5 fiesta 1.25
mk1/mk2 fiesta 950 or 1100
pug 106 or saxo

just go whichevers cheapest, my mate has not long passed his test and has got a mk1 fiesta 950 with all the xr2 kit, alloy wheels, sound system, alarm, immobiliser the lot... rang footman james and they quoted him £1013 or it would be £1200ish with a 1300 in it
only thing is with classic car insurance, you wont get any NCB but if your with them for say 4 years and you dont have a claim, then if you was to change to direct line etc then footman james will let them know that you havent claimed, and its up to the new insurers whether to reduce your price or not

ive got a mk1 fez 1100, boggo standard except sound system, my quote should be around the grand - £1100 mark

my sister has been driving for a year in a mk5 1.25 fiesta, im insured on it on my provisional and they are nippy little bastards for the engine size e.g. im doing driving lessons in a 1.2 fiat 500... the fiesta is fucking rapid compared to the fiat even though its 10 years older. Its even easier to drive and actually drives nicer than the fiat

whatever you buy will be a sod to insure, I know it may sound odd but even the same engined car will be cheaper to insure in a low/poverty spec trim than for example a ghia.

Sometimes, its cheaper to insure a bigger car; for example when i was your age a 1.6 focus was cheaper than a 1.25 fiesta, in those days less desirable to young drivers and less crashed. I would scan the web for cars with a low insurance group.... You'd be very lucky to get insured on anything with a performance badge, I had to wait to 21 for my xr3i.

Also, be aware that lots of ins companies won't offer classic car ins to younger drivers (i now qualify at 24) you also often can't use the car for commuting if you were planning it.

Dare i say buy a solid KA or even something like a Micra and reap the rewards by saving for the ford you really want. If you can run it for a few years, get some no claims and you'll find it pays dividends with the ins. My RS 2k is about £680 now, a focus or fez is around £400....

mk4 fiesta all the way, handle well, nippy (provided you get a zetec se engine), cheap as chips to run and maintain (not couting insurance, that will never be cheap).
