Mk5 zetec s. Can get a puma power one for that much allday long. Bought mine as a winter hack 2 years ago and still love it.
Returns 35 mpg and sits on the rev limiter every Time it's used.

why waste a grand
any old ford will be shit at a grand be it xr2 frst rst or a 3i
from my view it seems you have a car and its ecconomical so do you need to buy a low end different car just to pay 2x tax 2x insurance and all the other tosh
i woudl buy that cabbie cos its looks great for a grand and i would if it was local but i just store em away then sell em years later
i'd buy a new tv (if you need one) and bank the rest or bank it all and buy something later if it poppes up, crosser or summet

Primera GT - great handling and bullet proof 150'bhp
SAAB 9-5 turbo 2.3 lot of car for the money can be tuned up to big power
Omega 3.0'v6 - drives like a 5 series but costs peanuts
Puma - brilliant handling nice engine horrible seats and for £1k will be rusty around the arches
MR2 mk2 - good for £1k will get you one with no rust

Think before coming up with suggestions, we need to know it's use. I'm guessing weekend blast. Based on that I would say if Ford then a 1.7 Puma. Most other Fords for less than a grand are on their last legs apart from maybe an ST24. I don't know why Clio 172s are associated with unreliability, as long as cambelt and dephaser pulley has been done it should be fine, amazing how few problems are posted about them on related forums. As mentioned above MR2. Got an ST24 and they're great barges. Missus has the Puma and it's great for a blast and I am looking at getting a 172 for track fun. Most French hatches are ideal for low budget track use.
