Default What the hell is this?

My mk6 RS2k has been having a starnge running fault recently, so i decided to drop the tank and see if the intank filter has blocked.

the filter bag on the bottom was fairly furred up, so i clean that up. what has surprised me is what i have found in the tank...

The white bits are from the sides of my tank (in a plastic cap, where i tried disolving them)

swirl pot

Inside the tank, the silver bit at the bottom is where i could scrape with a screw driver.

Its like lime scale or something. a thin white layer over the entire inside of the tank. not on the swirl pot at all, just the metal. i've cleaned off as much as i could, and removed anything loose with compressed air.

its been refitted and refilled for now, and i haven't had a performance problem at all, but who knows how long before it get worse again?

any ideas what would cause this?

if it is a sort of scale, will anything dissolve it?

filter was changed last week, that was my first inkling that it might be fuel related, as i got a load of dirty crap out the intake side of the old filter. lumps that looked like wax, but crumbled into fine powder.
i flushed out the new one, today, though. its a pain in the ass trying to faultfind your everyday car...

I have seen this before on some old motorbikes and it is down to ethanol they are now putting more in petrol and it eats the fuel system on older cars.
