Default clear coating 3m carbon wrap

has anyone done this?

there is a few bits i wouldn mind having done on my mk7 zs

guessing it would be easier (cheaper) to do in vinyl rather then in actual carbon

but

i would like it to match the bits that i have already (proper carbon with clear coat)

pics would be cool if anyones done it

thanks

I have done it before, doesn't look half bad, but can still tell it's not real, especially if you already have carbon on it. Worth a try as it still looks good

I got some 3D stuff that you can feel the texture.

When i put a clear coat over them you cant feel the texture mind you but does not affect the look (only gives it a shine)

Cheers, what is it that you want to wrap? if its anything like a handle then ill buy the real thing.

It dont wrap round tight corners very well. See the top right and bottom.

The trick with this stuff is to use a hot air gun, it forms perfectly round tight corners

from a distance it looks good. Close up it looks blatent fake.

You could at least do it semi properly and use black diolen in 2x2 twill weave. Its 1/3rd the price of genuine carbon, under resin/lacquer looks identical and for cosmetic parts its lack of strength is irrelevant.

Gus - 3M have launched a new range of vinyls including a carbon vinyl that is glossier than the usual di-noc stuff! Looks more realistic IMO.... Never used it but i've used a titanium colour vinyl in that range for my mercs centre console and it is lovely to use!!

going by your name I presume you make / produce real carbon??!! Bit of a harsh statement i'd say!! Not everyone has the budget for real carbon?.....

Any Ideas where to get the glossy stuff from?, i've been looking for a while for the exact reason as Gus, to match a few other bits on the car.

Any 3M vinyl supplier will be able to source you this, its the 1080 range of 3M vinyl!

I've just used the same range vinyl to wrap my centre console and it came up lovely, really comforable stuff!! Took about 15 mins to do, 45 mins getting the blimmin console out!!!!

Gus - same number mate (ends in 703) but in the states at the moment. I have got some di-noc offcuts left over at home (quite a lot of smallish pieces) if you dont want to buy it by the metre (not cheap now).

Can't do windows im afraid all though I know someone local that does it cheap and is very good!!

gus don't you dare put any carbon wrap near that car of yours!!!!

If a jobs worth doing etc, you should know that. Wrap them i real carbon, flat them then lacquer. This will keep it all looking like authentic composite materials.

Wrapping parts in carbon is really simple and cheap, it is just very time consuming hence high prices compared to full carbon items.

If you need me to talk you through th process let me know.

With winter approaching this would be a good little project for you to have a crack at in the garage whilst the car is tucked up asleep etc
