agreed
a well driven mk2 can still show a STI or evo the way on a welsh tarmac stage

There might not be the best but they still get used in rallys now and do well against the modern cars.

I wouldent say so, lancia is the most successfull ralling manufacturer in history, especially in terms of group B.
The escort in MK1 and MK2 formats holds the record for most wins in the hands of privitears and works teams though
IMO, the greatest rally car of all in terms of shear performance is the lancia delta S4

Speaks volumes that they are still competitively campaigned in rallies. Anyone with sky should tune into motors TV and watch the irish boys. Caught a few minutes the other day of a perfectly executed double apex in a sweet mk2, full on broadside just looked far more entertaining than a scooby or evo imho.

The problem is with some of the Irish MK2s, is that they've probably cost as much as a WRC car
I think they probably are the most iconic rally car, and one of the most successful too. There have been better cars, but they have endured all, and are still out in huge numbers. Was bloody loads at the Prom Stages over the weekend, and they dominate historics and stuff still.

Of course the mk2 escort is the best rally car, Look how much even a bare shell changes hands for these days, shows how in demand they are.

Around ten years ago or so I used to have a MK2 1600 sport.
It was stripped out COMPLETELy, fitted with a simple bolt in cage, two buckets and harnesses.
Engine was a 180 BHP 2.1 litre pinto coupled to a type 9 box with a quickshift.
Never ever did I have so much fun as in that car!
I've had loads of sports and rallycars but the MK2 wins hands down when it comes to entertainement.
Very easy to drive very silly and drifiting across junctions was never as easy again!!!
Sideways madness absolutely everywhere and a soundtrack loud enough to wake the dead!
Fuck me, I miss that car!

Stories like that^^^^^ just make me want one even more. Its the raw, basic fun of the things that I feel very few cars can compete with.

fair play to what your saying about audi and lancia but they were rather unreliable compared to the mk2 escort

Got to be the most iconic rally car for me. I wish I had bought a RS2000 in the late 90's when they were much cheaper.
I dont think will be saying the same about the Fiesta WRC cars in 25 years time.

That may be, but how many people remember the 131 compared to the Escort? Even the Delta isn't remembered so fondly, by so many.
The Escort is an iconic rally car, which is probably why you have to watch hundreds of the bloody things at every rally across the country
