Stripped apart my inlet earlier on, just wondering if anyone has any tips for prepping it.. Used engine degreaser/thinner and all the rest of it but its still bloody dirty.

Planning on spraying it with VHT paint. It doesnt need primer apperently but I still want to make the prep work better than it already is! How can I get rid of all the dirt/grime?

Im going to be doing the same on my own in the next few weeks , i'll let you know how i get on ! I used a few different wire wheels and tfr on the block when i painted that , and it has come up really nice ! Only time will tell though but looks good so far !

Plus i dont think the poor thing would have held up well with a block in it

An inlet manifold should be ok though

I will once i work out how to do it ! I can load them up on the other forum i use but its different on here for some reason , havent quite mastered it yet

 

its easy mate, do u use a photobucket account? when you move the mouse over the picture it comes up with a little drop down box.. just go to the one that says IMG Code .. looks like you just paste the line underneath whatever your typing then press enter so its like a seperate sentance

 

first up, dont bother spending the extra for VHT paint, normal will be fine, inlet manifold wont be getting so hot that it needs any special paint

when i did mine, i just stripped it completely, and cleaned it up using thinners on red scotch, which removed most of the surface tarnishing. you wont really ever clean it up completely without blasting it though, so dont worry about a bit of crap left

i used an etch primer to make sure it adhered to the surface properly. then just base colour rattle cans, plus lacquer. oh and the face that mates to the head, i just used 2 inch masking tape across it and trimmed it with a knife to the right shape, then when i was done painting i went over it with 1500 wet n dry to clean it all up nicely

ah mate thanks a bunch! just what ive been looking for. how many coats did you use? i wanted to go for a black crackle paint effect on everything.. so will probly end up using vht crackle paint anyway. when you were prepping the inlet how clean did you make it? theres loads of black crap that just wont go been thinking about jetwashing it or getting a wire brush on a drill and having a go like that to clean it up.

maybe try a bit of brake cleaner on there to blast some shit off. then just red scotch, then whatever is left just leave, etch primer will cover it ok. then just as many coats of base as u want really, cos on crackle effect it all depends on how much crackle u want based on how heavy and what direction the coats are

 

Hi mate

Are there any blast shops near you as having it blasted will save you so much time & sore finger ends.

Having it blasted witl alu oxide or glass will give you the perfect etch for primer & paint.

It will also clean up all the nooks and crannies that you cant get into.

We blast everything first before we paint or powder coat items etc.

Below are some we have restored to concours spec.

carb cleaners usualy good for getting grease off engine parts...used it alot before an works well

 

carb cleaner and brake cleaner are kind of the same thing really, only i use brake cleaner as its a quid from the local pound shop lol. obviously im talking just for cleaning shit up, dont go using brake cleaner in carbs just incase, but for cleaning an inlet, its what i did and it worked fine

i did mine without the need for blasting and it came up just as good as all my other parts i did have blasted previously. so long as its cleaned thoroughly and etch primed, the finish will be nigh on identical

 

I`ve just done mine, cleaned it with Gunk and a tooth brush. A light sanding a wipe over with thinners and primed with etch primer. I wanted to keep it looking standard so i painted it Ford Strato silver. Then laqured.
