I have problems with rs turbo front brakes, discs will warp no matter what i do.
(283mm 2wd cossie discs+rs turbo calibers+brackets+braided lines)

Worth buying?
I know it is lot of money compared what i now have invested in front brakes but i am so sick about that steering wheel vibrating when braking hard.

Check your front bearings first.

I had exactly the same with my other half on her XR3i with that exact setup. She managed to warp every manufacturer of disc with every pad combination, including overpriced Ford OE ones.

I changed the bearings and the problem went away.

 

As already said hi-spec are shit go for anything made by wilwoods imo

 

i run a a similar set up to you, but i use 4wd cossie calipers and DS2500 pads and ive never warped a set of discs.

just fit a good set of 4wd calipers or 2wd 4pots and some good pads, i rekon they would stand up to the job

i had hi-spec 4 pots years ago on a FRST and although people say theyre shit, i found them to be alright for the money. it did take hi-spec 2 months to send me a set of calipers when the set they sent was wrong.

 

Maybe next step is to replace whole front hub assembly with new bearings. Altough bearings are not more than 3 years old and 2000km driven. I have to think about 4wd cosworth calibers, do they fit straight on in the standard hubs without any brackets or hassling..? I am using 15" standard rs turbo wheels so calibers have to fit under those.

 

As Bezo said fit a set of cossie 4wd callipers and 2wd disks. I had these fitted to my RST with the DS2000 pads (called DS performance now I believe) and will fit them to the cabby when I get a chance. Direct fit and cheap enough.

IMHO nobody should fit the setup you have with the calliper adaptors to fit bigger disks. It is cheap for a reason.

I just closed deal for second hand mk4 1.6 escort complete front hubs, i will install new bearings. Then i will get 4wd cossie front calibers and new pair of good discs.. i listen recommendations..

Red dot
EBC

Hi Antti,

Yes the 4x4 callipers are a direct fit with 2wd disks. You will need a 2mm washer between the hub and the calliper but they'll bolt straight up.

As for brands I just went for a STD set from my local motor factors. I've had bad experience with EBC disks cracking so I'd steer clear of those in my experience. On my Astra GSi Turbo I have a set of grooved disks off eBay, non branded. They are noisy but do the job very well.

what about st170 discs and mondeo calipers? newer + they don't have cosworth tax on them.

I think the only issue there is the "with some mods" bit. The beauty of the cossie conversion is it's bolt on and go. H

aving said that, mondeo ST24 callipers are meant to be the same as cossie 4x4 ones and the disks aren't expensive.

use mk3 mondeo calipers. £30 brackets £15 then the discs.

calipers need a little help with grinder for 15's but are ok with 16's

No you can't. I paid £80 for my escos callipers.

Trouble is, standard Mondeo callipers offer little gain over RST callipers. You still aren't covering the entire brakeable area of the disk, they still need adaptors plus they need modifying for 15's so you may as well stay with the RST ones.

The cossie callipers offer a greater surface area, no need for adaptors and they're a direct fit under 15's.

IMHO it's worth the extra £35

no the bracket is to space them out. they are 300mm on the mondeo too.

don't cossie ones needed spacers? or washers

 

Aaah, you must be talking ST220/v6 here if they're 300mm, standard mondeos are 265mm. They'll be more than £30 a pair surely?

The cossie ones require 2 penny washers to space them out.

I think i will try 4x4 cosworth calibers with new discs. I update this thread when i get some parts and my hands dirty.

 

why not wilwood 4 pots, same price for the kit as hi-spec and proven quality. and pads are cheap and available everywhere.

calipers won't help you!

It's the bearing or hub that is the problem. S2 calipers are fine. Give move braking effort than 4wd calipers.

 

Wilwoods I run and mate with a golf rallye no problems

 

I bought replacement hubs and i will change new bearings and use bearing lock glue. Is there some special hints related to front hubs?

Last time i sandblasted whole hubs (unfortunately bearing installation surfaces too) and after that not single braking has been vibrate-free. This time i _will not_ sandblast hubs or do anything but i just put those in part washing machine..

Shopping list includes:

-QH wheel bearing kit x 2
-national sport grooved discs
-ferodo ds performance pads.

Any comments about these?


Yesterday paid 4x4 front calibers, i will at least try those.

 

i had hi specs they wer good! but i sold em[good offer] and just got cossie brakes fitted[standard ones] and there still impressive!

 

Is M10x1,5 25mm long 10.9 bolt correct to fit front calibers?
My current status is i have now cosworth 4x4 front calibers in zinc coating, new gaskets, sliders waiting for installation. National sports 2wd cosworth discs.
Do i need something else to install 4x4 calibers to rst?

Problems!

Now i have cosworth 4x4 front calibers, 2wd cossie discs and ferodo premier pads installed.
Problem is that right front brake has too much power compared to left and locks first. Other problem is that rear brakes are still too powerful. I visited in the MOT station they checked brake powers in rollers and told me that rear brakes are superb but front brakes powerless.. I today bought new front brake flexi pipes but that wasnt any help.

 

Id keep out of those brake rollers if i was you matey unless you want to fook up your lsd box
