Default 1999 1600 focus dials sweep

hi guys i have a problem with my focus
every time i start it the dials all do
a full sweep then go back to normal
when driving occasionally stereo the lights
and all dials also die down (like a major drain on the alternator)
and car loses power
then all of a sudden it goes back to normal
can anyone point me in the right direction on
where to start looking
thanks kev

Dials doing a sweep on start up is usually a sign that your battery is on its way out. Could also be worth checking connections are tight and earth points etc are corrosion free. If you do change the battery make sure you get the right one, I think it is a silver calcium. If you don't then the smart charge system will kill a normal battery in no time.

hi and thanks for your info
i took a further look into it tonite and disconnected the 3 pin
plug on the alternator to find that 2 0f the pins were
snapped and had been bodged up with two bits of metal wedged
into the plug so i went and got another alternator changed it
and got one sweep after fitting then had stopped
but when left for over an hour or so it does one sweep
when starting again but the lights stereo etc have not cut
out and seems to have sorted that phoned the previous keeper
to find that he put a standard 063 battery he had in an astra
will this be causing the sweep and will this damage my electrical system ?
any more info on this appreciated
thanks

well you aren't supposed to use another battery that isn't designed for use with smart charge so it could well be at fault. Would put another battery on it and go from there!
