Default best mods for the st170

just thought id ask you guys which parts are best for the 170 (which exhaust filter remap) rather then waste money on parts and then replace them when i find out about better ones, my licence is free of points so i can get rid of my 1.4 and im not allowed a new bike for obvious reasons so any help would be great people

If you can put up with the clutch chatter then fit a lightweight fly wheel and uprated clutch, i have all the bolt on mods for the ST170 and to me this made the biggest difference to the driving experience, pulls so much better to 60

Good quality coilovers/shocks/springs and maybe some Eibach anti roll bars will make it alot faster than spending the same amount of money on the engine will.

Has anyone thought of putting a quaife diff in and changing the final drive in the gearbox? Ive just recently got an st170, and agree with the reviews that say the gearbox is too long.
Had a quaife diff fitted to a corrado vr6 before and it made the biggest difference to the driving experience for me.

Yeah, the diff was awesome in my corrado, could really put the power down in the corners and it just gripped and gripped and pulled the car round. When it finally did let go though it was a bit scary as both wheels were breaking loose instead of just spinning an inside one.
I reckon changing the final drive would make a massive difference to this car. Its the first car ive ever had where I actually use first gear a lot, and going to 65 or whatever in 2nd is stupid in a 2.0 16v.

You can actually hit about 72mph in 2nd lol, it is a long box though i agree, i dont change into 6th untill around 130mph. Also i belive the theoretical top speed for the Getrag box is 180+mph, it needed to be put in a much faster car!!

I wont lie a clutch and fly wheel swap would be expensive, if you do it yourself then it should cost you no more than £700 if you get it fitted then it could be as much as £1000 Seriously though a lightweight flywheel transformed the car more than anything, i can hit 60 in under 7 seconds which aint bad for a warmish hatch. I have coilovers, eibach bars and cam adjusters and i still think the flywheel was the best mod. I must admit though the coilovers do keep the car very flat during hard cornering, with the eibach lowering springs i had previously they did wallow a bit still.

craigfocus, sorry to hijack your thread mate, but im am after the same sort of advice.

i have a 5dr 52plate st 170, and i want abit more power, was thinking of the turbo route but thats just a complete fortune .

soooo, is it worth just putting a better exhaust system (full system inc manifold), enclosed induction kit and a remap?

suspension etc is already in mind .

cheers guys

Never come up against a type r but i would expect to lose but it would be close im quicker than the new golf gti's.
When i fitted my mongoose cat back and typhoon filter the engine definitely breathed easier. Coilovers polymers bushes and cam adjustment bolts make the st170 stick to the road like shit.
