The mrs has a 1.6 petrol focus on a 51 plate.

it has developed a problem and I could do with some assistance with finding the fault before I start changing loads of bits.

I can start by saying its definatly a fuel issue for two reasons,
A) if I pull the fuel quick release pipes off from the fuel rail I get a dribble of fuel
B) when I flick the key to 2 when the red lights come on I can say it isnt going to start as I dont hear the fuel pump pressurise.

Its definatly intermittant because it only seems to do it after a run, come back to it and the car wont start for 30 mins to an hour.

The fuse is ok, however as a side note it did pop 3 times last year and then never had an issue again.

Wiring loom does appear to be ok

I have tonight changed the fuel fitler, I have done this as I put a new one on about a month ago as the car had a service, it was a non ford item so tonight put a ford filter on it.

The fuel pump looks a bit of a crappy job,

Does any one think its the fuel pump,
How much will a new one cost,
is it worth me checking out any thing else.

i am sure if the crank sensor is failing on these it cuts the fuel pump. but i would pull the fuel pump first and bench test it.

 

Would the spark not fail too? I do get a spark from all 4 pots ok.

 

I had the fuel pump go on mine, and I'm sure I had random issues before it went.

The pump cost about £100, and I paid a garage to fit at another 100 quid. Sadly, the garage didn't actually attach the fuel lines properly, and I developed a major fuel leak.

I fixed this with a mate, by dropping the tank and fixing the lines in properly.

Wasn't too bad a job - lower exhaust, take off part of the heat shield, and drop the tank by releasing the metal straps that hold it. The pump housing just twists off.

I had identical symptoms with my old 1.6 focus when the fuel pump had had it!
