Default Driving at night with no lights, penalty?

Lastnight i was following two cars infront of me and infront of the two cars was a police focus st, anyway we got through some lights in town and coming the towards us on the other side of the road was a Toyota Celica with no lights on, and as soon as i saw him i thought uuh oohh your in the shit you fool, and sure enough the cars infront jammed their brakes on and the cop car does a 180 in the road, lights ablaze and goes after him just wondered what would he have got for that? im guessing theres no leeway on this one, points and fine for dangerous driving?

Depends, lots of cars it's very easy to drive without lights on, as the dash is lit permanantly, especially in a street lit area. I would like to think that unless it was stupidly dangerous they would just tell them to put thier lights on and be careful..

It was a 96-98 shape celica so i dout it has the permanently lit dash.

I really didnt think they would be THAT easy on him? end of the day its something you should check/do, just like putting a seat belt on?

My old man has just bought a brand new Zafira and the dash on that is permanantly alight, not the best design in the world.

Thing is, what benefit would giving him/her a ticket achive? It's not a deliberate violation unlike speeding/ seatbelt etc, so fine & points wouldn't really be a deterent, just a punishment. As said, easy mistake to make IMHO, sure you have done it at some point, I know I have.

As said im sure a 96 celica doesnt have this feature, but RWD cossie will made a good point, its not deliberate etc.

I was just interested to know what the outcome was.

And no i dont remember ever driving in the dark with no lights, i like to see where im driving.

P.s yes it was lit up, but still you dont get into a car at NIGHT time without not realising do you

Wait until you have a car with a permanantly lit dash, you WILL get caught out! I used to have an Astra GTE, it was a bastard for it as it was always lit up with the digi dash. What pisses me off is people driving in crap weather without lights on, as a black/grey car in rain/bleak conditions is very hard to spot.

I've done that a few times now in my astravan on the way to work in the dark mornings.

tbh its so easy to do with the dash lit full time, i look down to turn the heater on and can't see the dials. whoops! lol

Never in anything else though.

we get made to have the company vehicles lights on at all times. I had an ex cid car once and often forgot to put the backlights on at first. Got pulled for it too as the cop was talking to me through the window i said we'll look now and i appologised i flyly switched them on and his face was a picture lol

everyone does it occasionally.

I know a lot of theives and pikeys do it deliberately on side streets at night so they arent so easily spotted while they scope out the area to rob. caught them at it a few times before.
