Default How can i make my Focus 1.6 faster???

hello
i have recently put a 1.6 engine into my focus as i blew the 1.4 engine up lol
however its still slow and i was wondering how i can improve the performance of the engine without spending a lot of money. does the 1.7 puma inlet manifold fit this and make much difference? i was also wondering about changing injectors and the throttle body to a bigger one off a 2 litre or something? can someone help?
thanks

Agreed, sell it and buy one with a bigger engine, will be cheaper on insurance too than a modified 1.6

Didn't the formula ford cars run 1.6 zetecs? I'm sure I saw on 5th gear once they had a challange where they swapped a 1.6 zetec from a focus or something into a formula ford in a compertition against some colleges (probably a clip on youtube somewhere), thay had to change some of the components to formula ford spec, I think they changed the inlet, ECU, and the sump to a dry sump, maybe yopu could try and track down some of the parts and fit them to yours if you want to keep the standard lump in

1.6 inlets flow plenty of air, changing it will make no difference. Some ss4 cams, a full exhaust in. mani, panel filter and a remap/chip to suit the cams can see up to 150bhp on the se engines. But, personally, I'd just wait and buy a faster focus...

The SE isn't a bad engine really, you can get around 135-140HP from them with cams, exhaust system and a remap (Bearing in mind a 2L is 130HP), see www.shawspeed.com for more info.

Sell and buy a 2.0 esp or a st170. I cringe at the money ive spunked on cars in the past, should of just bought a faster one instead.

Been there, done that, it honestly isn't worth the hassle trying to make a small engined car fast. Leave the money in the bank until you can afford something quicker straight out of the box!

Swardy,
I too have a 1.6, a 'Chic' ltd edition. I'm trying to make it the mintiest of minty mint versions of the 'Chic' there is (with maybe one or two subtle mods, such as a K&N panel filter, cat back replacement exhaust, MP3 wheels etc)

If you want performance, do as other posters have suggested. Save the cash, get an ST170 or MK1 Focus RS. Handy if you have a garage if you get an RS depending where you live to keep it out of the way of covetous theiving eyes.

If your keeping the 1.6, just keep it clean and use it as a cruiser rather than a racer lol

Sell the thing and get another Focus with an engine that has enough torque to haul its lardy backside with. A 2.0 litre is the bare minimum you should be looking at, preferably an ST170 or an RS if you're really serious.

Mate doing all of that would cost more than the car is worth and prob make it a nightmare to insure. As above save up till you can buy something quicker out of the box, then mod that.

I would either sell up and get a 2.0l, or accept it will never be a rocket ship, maybe lower it to improve handling in the twisties and look at keeping it well serviced and check on stuff like bushes etc to keep it tight handling, then maybe a decent exhaust and filter to help breathing.

Not really worth chucking cash at it as it will never be quick and will be £££££ to get any big improvement, big car, small lump = slow.

Then you have something wrong, 1600 will do 105 with ease, why are you interested in top end speed, you can't use it anyway really? I would be more interested in bottom end power personally.

Needs a good service/new coilpack? That's where I'd start tbh...Other than that, is it burning oil?

All coilpack's are the same, think there's only 2 different ones across the whole ford range, and the only difference between these is the ht lead fittings!
