Default Rear brake disc dust sheilds, cos.

Other than the obvious, do they do anything else?
Are they part of the spacing on hub etc?
To the point, mine are fucked so they are they essential to replace??

Nothing to do with hub spacing or anything like that, run without them if you wish, or replace with some tidier ones

Mainly used to keep water from the disc after going through deep puddles etc, I always take them off most cars, but run drilled discs so the water can escape instantly if soaked, and I apply the brakes, stops you getting the slight pause before they bite.
