i built a big one like that last year it was 55ft long 25ft wide roller doors on either side you could drive rite thru it.wish i had pic's off it. yous would off loved to see the cars that went in to it. all old cars one off them was worth Ł175000 there was a few off them in when i was puting the skirting on i was shiting myself incase i hit one.

this build has inspired me to build my own looks really easy tbh and a lot cheaper than to buy just a big readymade wood workshop.

 

What is the white cladding you have used?

 

It PVC sofit board.
Normally used like this,





But i just ussed it as full length along the walls.

It Tunged and Grooved so it easy, cant remember right, but you have to start at the bottom and work up.

Its cheap. but only good if your use ply on the inside of garage for strength.

i used it on the 2 wall faceing the front of the house, the back to walls are Galvanized sheeting.

didnt realise when looking at the structure that your spread between the roof rafters was so big...great project and an easy build by the looks of it...i think i mentioned it to you on the IEC site about the lack of use of dpc under the timber frame, personally i think that was not a good move....how did it cope with the big snow fall we had??? im gonna go ahead and build the shed now after seeing this again....i never thought of using the soffit board as a finish....the garage looks the job man...

I built one very very similar a couple of years back, prob my best mod ever.. Stands me in about 2k in total including all the electrics. I'll post up some pics...

Its 18ft X 15ft. Comfortably fits in two cars that can be worked on at the same time

how thick is that concrete base?

 

Roosie.... I'll get some up tonight if not over the weekend.. I kinda got a bit carried away with the base and it ended up about a 10 inches roughly, which actually did me a favour as now have a gentle curver near the doors which stops the rain etc getting in..

make sure and get the DPM below the concrete, i would also advise you put in 8mm reinforcing mesh.

 

Iv 5 inches of concrete in mine, with 2 of them 3x5meter steal grid mesh jobys.

More then enough, my drive is only 4 inch with no steal, and the 20 tonne lorry delivered the concrete by driving over that, and that was fine,

what size is that gixser?

 

hi roosie, i built it an "L" shape for more room at the back.
its around 7.5m long and 5.5m at the wide point at the back.
the front is around 3.6m
wish i had made it wider tho.

 

people keep telling me to put hardcore down but does it really need it?
im going 5"deep with metal gridding and damp proof membrane.
its only going to have cars in there nothing heavy

also im going 16ft wide but can go 18ft if i want to but its going about 30ft back

 

better to put it in, dig soil out and put 150mm type 1 or similar. get it whacked down and blind the type 1 with whin dust, this will stop any sharp edges of the hardcore puncturing the polythene membrane as you lay the concrete base.
your only goin to do it once so better to do it right mate

 

the rule of thumb roosie is to dig out any soil that is capable of growing vegetation ,and as a builder i would 150% put hardcore underneath it to support the concrete .make sure you roll or whack in the harcore as well.
i would dig down minimum 14 inches and put 8 inches of hardcore and then blind it off with 1 inch of sand ,lay a 1200g visqueen/plastic membrane on top and put a layer of 383 mesh in then lay 5/6 inches of concrete on top of that.
one of the problems with concrete cracking is when the soil heaves /expands in wet conditions.thats why you should take the soil down to the harder subsoil underneath.

all the measurements are what i would use as a minimum to be safe

 

so do i use type 1 or hardcore as there 2 different things aint they?

 

im not sure stu how what you call it in england ,but if you used broken stone 3 or 4inch down would be fine
