I was looking at getting a set of spot weld drill bits to drill spot welds. Couple of my mates said that they are not worth getting and just use a normal drill bit, but others say they are well worth having. So look forward to any reply's to your post

As foreigner RS says there are two types. One is like a small hole cutter which cuts around the spot weld. Ive never used this type as it leaves metal to grind/clean up after. I use the type which is like a normal drill bit but flat on the end with a centre pip. I centre punch the middle of the spot weld first. These type remove the spot weld from the top panel. With a bit of practice you can leave the bottom panel undamaged ready for a new panel to be welded on. You have to be careful not to overheat them as they will blunt very easily but can go on for ages if used properly.

Got to disagree there chap, the ones with a claw are much better, but you really need to give them a good hole punch first as a guide as they can move around a bit otherwise.

Nothing wrong with the other type but I'm definitely converted after using the spring loaded claw ones!!!

I like the fact that they leave a little bit of metal behind as it a lot easier to weld the new panel too after you've drilled the holes.
