I'm eventually biting the bullet and doing it. Getting it from a family member, its been stood empty for nearly 2 years now, managed to negotiate a decent mortgage so now its just a matter of completing the formalities and getting the paperwork signed over.
Nothing special to be honest, 2 bed terrace, requires work (its had a brand new bathroom in, and new kitchen units, but ideally the kitchen layout needs changing) has gas central heating and double glazing so all good.
Rest of its not so good mind, it needs completely updating everywhere, place is fucking minging, lounge needs gutting and ideally laminate putting down, leading out into the hallway to the front door. The stairs are SO steep its unreal, so looking at knocking them out and getting a standalone staircase built in (I will put photos on tomorrow to explain what I mean). Upstairs its 2 bedrooms, both need gutting and new carpets or whatever putting down etc. Overall it could probably do with re-wiring as well. Thankfully the boiler & radiators were put in just before the last occupants moved out (it was used as a rental property) as are the windows etc...
Chuffed to bits if i'm honest, its going to take some work but once ive tidied the lounge/bedrooms up it will be liveable whilst I do the rest.
Cheap as chips too

Hi fella, from personal experience get the wiring, stairs etc done first while you don't really need to live in it because it gets really tough to do it when you move in.
It's a great experience owning your own home and doing it up,I only wish I'd had another month renting elsewhere so I could have completely finished the rough stuff before I moved in......didn't help that we changed the layout halfway through mind!!!
Those old terrace houses are brilliant buys, really well built, but beware of the black dust,it gets everywhere!!
Just remember, get some shares in 6mm masonry drill bits and red rawl plugs ,you'll go through a lot of them!!
Shop around for stuff as prices for materials can vary ridiculous amounts, plaster, cement wire etc, unless your on a buy one get one free from b&q then generally the builders merchants are far better.
Most of all,get it done to how YOU want it and enjoy!!!

Rewire the place first before you do anything else, including gutting the place, the carpets will contain most of the crap and plaster and shit so it'll be much easier to pull them out and skip them with everything in them
And if it's got chimneys you want out, nows the time, same with doing a through lounge or the like. That way you can get the plasterer to do the whole lot in one go rather than bits at a time
Also, when you do te leccy make sure you've got a big enough fuse board to add to later on as you may want to upgrade stuff. Underfloor electric heating in the kitchen is most excelent
Good luck with it, and remember, you can sleep in your car but you can't race your house
