Default which fuel tank for my 1989 s2 mfi

Hi Chaps, need a little help please.
Need to replace my fuel tank on my 90 spec 1989 mfi s2 esc turbo.
removed old tank and it has the slim type senderwith a white float.
ordered another tank, its arrived but its got a bigger hole on top with a different sender and a black float.
do you know what the difference is and if the replacement will work?

have i got the wrong tank on at the moment? should it be the big sender one?
is the slim sender one for efi?

if its compatible gotta spend hours trying to clean it out cos the prat who sent it to me didnt bung the holes up,sent it in a box of loose polystarine packing, and its all got inside the tank, been melted by the old remains of fuel and its like glue everywhere.

so basically, need to know if it will defo work before i assign my day to sortin it.

thanks my lovely rs brothers

Hi rsmark.
Appreciate the offer of a tank buddy.
Do you know if the big hole and small hole types are both compatible?

The one on your car is the correct tank with the smaller sender so you will need to replace it with the same if you want your fuel gauge to work correctly

I have connected the fuel sender and manually played with it and it's very accurate on the guage. Can't see how it would be any diff on the car. Guess I'll have to try it

IIRC all S2's have the same tank except the very late ones (89>) with the small sender hole.
I think the pipework inlets/outlets are slightly different too so they are not compatible.

Basically there are two types of tank for the mfi s2

88 Spec - large sender hole

90 spec - small sender hole

You just need to swap the 90 spec one you have for the larger 88 spec one - as you see from the pics the pipe locations are slightly different and the sender size is completely different.

** NOTE ** A large number of 90 spec cars did still have the 88 spec tank on it tho so its not unusual to find an 88 spec tank on a 90 spec car (used to clear ford stocks at the time as it wouldnt be noticed I assume)

Simples !!!

good info there s2turbsZVH also worth noting the efi tank would have no provision for the k-jet pump underneath as it runs an internal pump.
